Dealing with high temperatures
So, it's absolutely roasting here, and Violet isn't much enjoying the heat. So far, we have had reduced walks, lots of ice cubes and a damp towel to try and make her feel a little more comfortable, but I was wondering if anyone had any other ideas for keeping our staffies cool in this boiling weather!

Tilly is so nice and well behaved in front of the fan - Violet is a menace who tries to attack it The heat stroke notice was what made me think it wasn't just Violet being a drama queen!
The heat here is just too much for her, she goes about ten steps, then lies belly up. It's starting to attract crowds

Re: Dealing with high temperatures
Charlie does not like the heat at all. I just try to keep him cool with lots of water and he likes to lay out in the front hall by the stairs because that's the coolest part of the house. In this heat, he can only handle very short walks. He's panting heavily by about 15 minutes in, and he pants for at least half an hour after getting home.
I know how he feels, I can't stand being too hot!!

I've been out all day today so my daughter's walked her but yesterday she was goosed , along the canal and then bang down on her belly not moving , so we sat for a good while and watched the ducks , then back walking again and she kept doing this, last night it was just incessant panting , she's the wrong colour for this heat

When hot, my three sleep it off in the air conditioned house with the ceiling fans going. Shade, sweet shade is what they crave. That and water.

Lexi loves heat, she will sit in the sun all day long if she can. She chases it all day, in the morning its in the flower pot, in the afternoon its right over the patio and in the evening its in another bit of garden just beside a wall. Theyre her three favorite places to sit lol

A damp towel's ok if you're just using it to damp her down, but don't drape it over her! It'll act like a sauna & actually make her hotter.
I use soaking wet paper towels & just wet his belly, chest, head & feet, and try to get him to lay down in a cooler place.

We have ceramic tiles on most of our floors, apart from the bedroom which has carpet, the tiles are quite cool for Rocky to lay on, but guess where he chooses to lye down?? Yes you guessed it the bedroom floor No idea why

Tell me about it. Dempsey lays down in front of the oven.

Re: Dealing with high temperatures
Ledger loves the sun and will usually seek out the little patch of light that shines on the floor to lie in or will sit on my knee/shoulder if I am sat in the sun but he seems to seek out water and shade when he needs it, tbh I thought he should have had more water when we were out today but he didn't want it but then he was in the sea a fair bit and the brook when we got home. Got me thinking though to try and install a non spill water bowl in the back of the car as when we were heading out this morning we got stuck in traffic so were longer between drinking opportunities than I had planned

Re: Dealing with high temperatures
Young pups can't regulate their body heat as efficiently as adults. As Kathy says, a couple of ice cubes might help him a bit. If you don't have ice cubes, then wetting his belly, head & feet with cool (not icy cold) water can help.

Re: Dealing with high temperatures
I made sure my pup Tank drank loads today even put a bit if water into his meals.
Dunked his legs and belly in the cool water which he loved, we filled up one of those plastic storage boxes with water and put some floating toys in it so the dogs were playing with that a lot today.

No point in draping it over her - it'd be dry within minutes!

Yes, but in the meantime it will have raised her body temperature!

Re: Dealing with high temperatures
We have got a cheap non inflatable paddling pool for the dogs, they will either dive in and out of it, try and drink it dry or actually lay in it and refuse to come out
If I get too hot I sit next to and dangle my feet in it
I also keep the big patio door curtains closed to keep the living room cool, but Charlie will still sunbath in any patch of light he can find

We have a cooling collar we use if we walk her during the middle of the day. We also reduce the time if the sun is out but we normally just take her in the early morning and after the heat has worn off

just spotted a paddling pool for £3.99 in argos so that is value enough if it only lasts a few minutes

revised to £3 in ASDA it lasted about 20 seconds but he had fun shaking all the soggy shreds around then lay down in the water he'd tipped out

Re: Dealing with high temperatures
Marley is quite bad in the heat, his back an legs have a short staffie coat but he has a Husky double coated neck which is quite thick. For walks I take a rucksack with water and a bowl and have been keeping them short in the day and doing long ones at night after 10pm. in the house I have a fan on the floor for him which he barked at at first but know loves sitting in front of it. thinking about getting one of those pools jakieb found as he loves playing in water.

We bought one and Tilly won't go anywhere near it , I really need to work on her conquering her fear of water, once we have a new pup , want to encourage him as much as I can and hope Tilly follows suit

I wish Cairo would use paddling pools but she wont go near them. Its a shame because she really suffers with the heat.Last year it made her sick even though she wasnt out in it.This year she hasnt been sick thankfully.I have to remove all her blankets from her bed though because she still tries to get underneath the covers in this weather

Re: Dealing with high temperatures
Was worried last night as Tilly took over 2 hours to settle on the bed panting short and fast , not going to water so we were feeding her water by syringe, had to get the desk fan out again and kept waking up every 30mins and checking on herLisa & Cairo wrote:I wish Cairo would use paddling pools but she wont go near them. Its a shame because she really suffers with the heat.Last year it made her sick even though she wasnt out in it.This year she hasnt been sick thankfully.I have to remove all her blankets from her bed though because she still tries to get underneath the covers in this weather
