dealing with Mr. Know it all!! Empty dealing with Mr. Know it all!!

Post by Fryfogle29 Wed Feb 13 2013, 13:37

So we don't even have our pup yet and already my father in law is at it with telling me what to do and when. We were having a conversation in the car yesterday morning and we were talking about everything from the beginning to now about the pup, as I just told him yesterday about any of it. He proceeds to try to tell me that we should have our pup next week (Because it's perfectly fine to get them soon as they're weened from their mum) Surprised SERIOUSLY!? So, silly me I try to reason with him and tell him. "No, I've been doing the research." To which he says to me " Look, I own three dogs, I got all three of mine when they were 5 weeks old, I think I know more than you do about dogs." frustrated completely ticked by this time I told him. Look dad, know you do things however you see fit, but I'm here to tell you I'm not bringing that pup home till it's time, they need to be with their litter mates so they know how to be a dog! And you can think what you want but that's that. smug It really ticked him off when I told him that too. So he dropped that issue and then started in on telling me the brand of dog food that I must buy and that he'll give me his outdoor dog box so we can tie our pup to it in our yard. he really got irritated when I told him that our pup was going to be an indoor pup. He said " Only small dogs are to be left in doors, you are not going to want that brute of a dog in your house, you've got to be kidding me." there was A LOT I wanted to say here but I for once.. I kept my mouth shut!! ( that's a miracle in and of it's self as I ALWAYS speak my mind.)

So completely ticked with this man right now. Thank God my Hubby came home to listen to me rant and says to me " It's alright, I know my Dad's an idiot sometimes. He's always right and he knows everything. Just let it go." PFFT! at wits end @@ Least he knows his Dad is impossible!

Glad you find it funny. Smile He has 3 Toy Pomeranian's And each of them are so spoiled and yappy. They beg at the table when you eat and they bark constantly. He also treats EVERYONE else's Dogs as if they're untrained mutt's.

As you said, dogs are better left with their mother as long as possible. Absolute minimum 8 weeks. Means they are healthier and have already started to learn boundaries. Mummy dog can teach better than any of us can.

Food is a wide range topic, everybody has their beliefs. General rule, buy the best you can afford, meat number one ingredient and decent percentage and very few fillers. Anything cheap is cheap for a reason.

Staffords in my opinion are not dogs that do well with being tied up outside. No dogs really do. Staffords are great house dogs if taught how to behave. Most don't do well in extremes of temperature either.

Yes. I agree Smile I live in Ohio (eastern side of the States) and folks around here are always saying "only in Ohio" in regards to the weather, it could be 90 degrees and sunny today and 40 and rainy tomorrow! That's really not an exaggeration Laughing I live in a neighborhood where we are among the youngest to live here, we have folks that live behind us with 3 kids and no fence around our acre of yard. I find it cruel to leave a dog chained outside to be filthy and alone when they're pets and part of the family should be in the house to be played with and snuggled Big Grin I do love my father in law but boy does he get under my skin Tongues

I think I found a good pet food online that is also sold at a local pet store. Main ingredient is Meat and I'm not sure weather to go with the Rice or the Barley. The brand has both! Smile

@ Dave, that's right my Husband is right 100% of the time! rolling on the floor rolling on the floor and yep 3 yappy yippy dogs that get fed whatever he chooses from the table. He was an over the road truck driver for his entire life so he had 3 small dogs to keep him company.

Dont take any notice of him. A staffie is not just a dog, they think they are people & there's no way it would tolerate being tied up in a kennel when there is a comfy sofa & bed indoors!!! At least your new pup will have something small to chew on when you visit him Laughing

No way Laughing that'd be so annoying. My parents have had dogs their whole lives, always rescue dogs or dogs they took from family members who were neglecting them. So they think they know all about dog training, but EVERY single dog they've had has been badly behaved, whether mildly or severe problems. I respect them for looking after dogs so much and for putting up with all of their problems and never putting them into rescue centres...but there's no way I'd take even a hint of training advice from them Laughing owning dogs doesn't make you good at training. Sounds like you know what you're doing with researching it Smile

Don't worry honey let it go in one ear and straight out the other. You sound like you know what your talking about and are going about it all the right way so ignore him and do what you think and know is best for your pup.
And why oh why would anyone have a dog just to tie it up in the garden what kind of life is that for a dog and what point is in it, a dog is supposed to be part of the family to enjoy each other and have fun. So pleased your not doing that when you get your pup and can't wait to see some puppy pics I love staffy pups they are so cute Smile Have you found your pup yet or you still looking?

Big Grin going to make it hard to pick one then Wink When my mum and dad got their first dog, Sue, dad picked her because she was the smallest and quietest one of the litter. She grew into an awesome dog but was far from quiet Smile
When they went to get Molly, their next dog, my mum sat in the middle of the litter and let the pups come to her. Molly came over and sat on her foot and wouldn't budge. Thats how they got Molly Smile If you cant pick one see which one comes to you, I'm a strong believer in the animal picks the owner Smile Good luck though and can't wait to see some puppy pics Smile

We wont be getting a puppy from this litter at all. I just can't allow it, as I did find out during the visit that the pups are from a brother/sister (of the same litter) Breeding. And I just can't do it. Wont do it.
