Eating grass!
when murphy is out back with me or anyone else for that matter he insists on eating grass no matter how many times you tell him not 2 but being a pig headed staffy he keeps on doing it! He doesn;t graze on it like a cow but seems 2 happen more when he is excited! He has been wormed recently! Can any1 give me advice on why he does this. Thank you!

Re: Eating grass!
Up set stomach (according to my vet) I find If mine doesn't eat at all or only half what she would do usually, she would eat grass then bring it up 10 mins later when I take her out for her night time walk.
Next day she is fine and eats all her food no problem

Re: Eating grass!
Buster seems to be eating it quite a bit at the moment, but he prefers it when it's long and wet - which with this draught seems to be all the time at the moment! I had heard it was an upset stomache, but I have also heard it's to do with the water in it so I don't have a clue! Lol. Doesn't seem to do any harm though, Buster is never sick from it.

Re: Eating grass!
Its unusual for Ledger not to eat a bit of grass as some point during the day normally only a blade or two of the long tufty stuff and I have only had the joy of pulling a blade of it out of his bum once.
He certainly doesn't graze on it like my parents dog does when she wants to make herself sick but then I figure he just likes the taste as he loves fruit and veg especially lettuce

marley is the same, we have to drag in off the long grass, but a little now and then won't hurt

My 2 do it all the time. Millie is really bad, I have to drag her away once she finds a bit she really likes.

Re: Eating grass!
Marley and riley eat grass all the time and Im sure there not ill either. I have noticed alot of dogs seem to be doing it. 2 GSD's we walk with also like a nibble. Marley always seems to give it a good chew so its like he loves the taste, possibly the sugars in it im guessing.
Apparantly can cause laminitis in horses, found this a while back
So maybee they just love the taste of it

taken from http://www.horsevet.co.uk/laminitis.phpRestrict grazing hours to night time when the sugar content (fructans) of the grass is lowest. The sugar content starts to rise at 9am, peaking at midday, before falling to lower levels again by 4pm.
So maybee they just love the taste of it

Re: Eating grass!
The odd bit of grass isn't a problem. I grew up thinking that dogs eat grass to make themselves sick when they don't feel well, but I don't now think that's the case. They just seem to like doing it! Not so nice when you have to pull long strands of grass out of the other end, though!
A little word of warning. A couple of mouthfulls won't do your dog any harm (as long as there's no weedkiller on it of course), but any excessive eating of grass should be stopped immediately & maybe a quick examination from your vet - Dempsey did this about a year ago & was manically eating grass all one evening. Because dogs can't digest grass it just gathered into a huge lump in his stomach, started producing gas & caused bloat. He had to have an emergency operation to remove it all.
