First time staff owner
Hi guys,
I've had my pup staff since he was 12 weeks old and now he is 23/24 weeks.
I've been brought up with dogs my whole life but never had a staffy. I've done my research though and am trying to bring it up the best I can but I need to know if I'm on the right path with my lil baby. He is amazing with everyone in the family especially as we have 2 young kids around.
Already taught him to come for a "wee wee" when I go for a smoke, sit, paw, down, and sometimes over (as in to roll over).
He does however get too excited when he greets people, he's very fond of hands and it is difficult to break him out of it, I know it's just him getting excited and combined with teething but when he meets people I don't want the whole bad media stigma to enter their minds.
Any comments would be appreciated.
(ps, if there's any spelling mistakes I blame my phone and auto correct)

Re: First time staff owner
Have him sit and wait before he greets people. Doing this at meal time is also a good way to practice patience. It might also be a good idea to explain to people that he is still in training and tends to get a bit excited.

Re: First time staff owner
I tried this today as I was meeting a friend at the local pub as its between our houses, so naturally everyone there wanted to give him attention. So I took him out to a bench and tried to calm him before hand. He was fine with the first person but when someone else tried the same thing (after obviously) didn't want little rocco to feel overwhelmed) he got excited all over again, I don't know whether to put that down to a new environment or just loves to be fussed over.
Thank you, at least I know I'm on the right lines
So many things I need to get him to do so I feel like I've done my best for him because he is a gorgeous dog, will try and get a couple of pictures up soon

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.
You could try keeping him on the lead when first meeting people, this also works inside the home too.

Sorry about the long URL, trying to get it from Facebook to forum on a phone is a pain.
This is when I first got him.

This is him a couple of weeks ago getting an air vent thing stuck around his neck (don't worry it is off now)

Here is a link that will show you an easier way to post pics and videos here. Takes a little time to set up but once you have the hang of it it's really easy

Re: First time staff owner
I left him playing in the garden for 5 minutes. He some how knocked off the plastic cover and must have tried to climb through the air vent to get something, I walk outside to have rocco looking up at me with a look of "look what I've done...I'm sorry" so it took half an hour to get it off. He hasn't done it again since!
I absolutely fell in love with him as soon as I saw him!

Re: First time staff owner
I found it funny afterwards, at the time I was panicking. Just got back from his walk, was really dredging this day... I let him off the lead in an open field for the first time. He didn't leave my side until he found a teenager and wouldn't leave her alone, the over excited greeting again! But apart from that, couldn't wish for a better start

Staffys love human attention. You are doing all the right things. Like you I am a first time staffy owner, except we got our lovely Pixee from the Blue Cross, and wouldnt be without her. They are very clever dogs, so will learn from you.

Re: First time staff owner
Is it better to restrict his human acess to family and a handful of people to begin with or indulge him with human contact?

Re: First time staff owner
The way I see it is, if you let every human fuss him, he will grown up excepting that, and could possible every time hes off the lead run up to other humans, possible scary a few kids? Some one will correct me if I am wrong.

Re: First time staff owner
Yea I see that could possibly happen, but if I restrict him to certain people he may accept them and no one else, I know it's me probably being too cautious but with all the misconceptions about staffs I just want to make sure he's on the right track. After all he is my baby

Re: First time staff owner
I totally understand where you are coming from re the misconceptions about Staffys from people who judge them wrongly! I do get certain looks, and I always smile. I dont see the harm in keeping to family and friends who visit, so it teaches him good manners too. But friendly dogs will always say hello, you just have to teach him when its acceptable.

Re: First time staff owner
So Roccos 2nd walk of the day was more of a success, he ignored humans but was more interested in other dogs and he was very well behaved. But this is what I hadn't missed owning a dog. People.
They have to stick their nose in. Trying to tell me what to do with him, ie, you have to keep him on a lead because he's a dangerous dog. Have you tired a muzzle.
Seriously wound up now, I know my dog better than you pal. If I wanted advice I certainly wouldn't ask you who had a jack Russell x with a bloody stud collar and metal chain lead.
Sorry guys rant over. I followed the advice with him, he's been with me all day. I've completely ignored him when he's over excited but all of a sudden he's found his voice lol. Got a feeling he will catch on, as I've informed the family to do the same

Pleased its going well, and yes they can be rather vocal! Right now Moo is moaning because I'm ignoring her lol!
You'll have to grow thick skin around stupid people that think they know best! Ignore, thats why I have a dog, its beats a human lol!

Re: First time staff owner
Alot of us here have been there, kenny was so bad that he used to hang off people clothes. I phoned a professional trainer because i just couldnt stop him, she said when he's doing it either gently remove him from the room or completly ignore him. She also promised he'd grow out of it and he did. I think they just playfull pups with bucket loads of energy. I used to think he had problems cause he was that crazy, but no, he's fine. Things will calm down

Re: First time staff owner
anyone that comes into my staffy household i tell " turn your back if they jump up and put hands in a fist (close to body) so they cant be nipped and when they have calmed down you can say hello! doesnt always work as some people like to excite my 2 but they are just excited and mean no harm!
