Allergy Advice
Hello,
When I first rescued Troy he had very dry ears and loss of hair and the tip of his tail was dry also. I changed his food to James Wellbeloved and his ears healed up very well and I was pleased with his progress.
They are a lot better but I noticed they are starting to get dry around the lining of his ears with some hair loss. I can't think of anything that has changed except for possibly the brand of treats he has had and peanut butter annd banana in his Kongs.
Are there any specific and commonly known things that can cause skin allergies in dogs so I can try eliminating them from his diet first before looking at other things and skin scrapes? Is peanuts one of them?
Thanks.

Re: Allergy Advice
Has he had issues with these foods, before...granted they are a change but have you given them before? i would think about the season/weather changes, and enviromental before going to food right away, TBH

Re: Allergy Advice
I have only had Troy about 5 weeks and he came to me with an allergy issue. The previous owner never fed him regularly and when he did it was probably the cheapest stuff he could find or scraps off the table.
I was looking at food first because I put him on James Wellbeloved upon getting him and his condition got better. After that, I started stuffing his Kong with peanut butter but I don't think this is what it could be though I am not sure. I am basing this on human allergies and I am not sure if dogs usually have an allergy towards nuts?
He never had banana from me before, this is newly introduced and more recent.

Okay thanks.
I'll have to do a bit of googling too.

Re: Allergy Advice
Suki is allergic to beef, chicken, fish and a ton of other things. She was getting lumps and dry spots so we took her to a dog dermatologist and had a test run. Know we feed her on a dry food of buffalo and sweet potato. The dermatologist told us there allergies can change as the age as well.
Enviroment and seasons can also play a role.

Wow that's a lot of allergies. Sorry to hear that. Do you mind mr asking the costs involved for the allergy test and what it entailed?

Re: Allergy Advice
The cost was around $500 US and was just a matter of drawing blood and sending it to a lab for analysis

Re: Allergy Advice
If you have a look at the website there is some information listed under Health Concerns about allergies.
Hope this helps a little:

Re: Allergy Advice
You could try putting some salmon oil on his food, this helps with dry skin. He could be allergic to peanuts, it is possible. Try him with some liver paste in his Kong instead for a week and see if it helps at all.
I've never heard of a mild reaction to peanuts, only fatal ones but then i'm thinking of humans.

Yeah, I've cut peanut butter out for now and I am using meat sandwich pastes.

Re: Allergy Advice
You could also try half a piriton tablet (not Piriteze!), twice a day (morning & evening) and see if he gets better with that. If he does, then it's an allergy. If he doesn't then it could be that he's missing something from his food - in which case you could add salmon oil as capsules or poured over his food.
