Advice needed please :)
Hi all,im new to this forum and looking for some advice about my 16 month old bitch, she is a blue staffordshire bull terrier, she is a very happy and playfull girl but shes very hyper, dominant and is showing signs of aggression towards our other dog, mainly if someone knocks at the front door or when being let out into the garden, she goes hyper, spinning round and trys to bite the others face and neck (has never marked the other dog),we spoke to a vet about it and they said spaying could reduce the agression but have also been told by other people that it wont? has anyone on here had this experience and tryed spaying and has it worked? shes also on the go 80% of the time wanting to play fight while the other just wants to chill out, walkin doesnt seem to make a difference at all,she is my 4th staffy over the years and non have acted like this, any advice welcome as i desperatly want to sort this, many thanks x

Hi & welcome to the forum.
Firstly, spaying has never been proved to reduce aggression in bitches. But I'm not sure that this is aggression as such. She sounds more hyperactive.
What do you feed her on?

Re: Advice needed please :)
If you can afford it I'd switch to a better food such as James Wellbeloved, Barking Heads, Fish4dogs, Arden Grange or Royal Canin.
What does the other dog do when she snaps at it-does it react at all? Is the other dog a male or female and what is their age?
From what you've said it sounds pretty much like your female wants to be the boss of the pack and is putting the other dog in its place. She wants to protect the prime resources e.g being the first at the door (does she get fussed a lot by people coming to the house?) and the garden. Does she steal the other dogs food and toys at all?

Re: Advice needed please :)
the other dog is male,he is neutered,it doesnt bother him,he just walks off from her,hes twice the size of her too, when someone comes in the house she is constantly jumping up and trying to nibble on hands, not nasty just really over excited and seems oblivious to being told no,when shes finished her food she will try and get the others but is told not too and she does actually listen then, she also trys to sit on the other when hes asleep,so i do think your right about it trying to be top dog, what could i do to stop this? ive red some bad reviews of harringtons tonight so will be looking for a different food x

Re: Advice needed please :)
You need to go back to basics with this young lady. Make her work for everything, food, affection etc. She needs to sit and wait while you answer the door, preparing her food etc. If she displays dominating behaviour, put her firmly in her place. She needs to understand that you are in charge, not her. Good luck

I agree with Shontelle. If you have clear boundaries and are the only controller of resources then she would have no need totry and assert he position.

Re: Advice needed please :)
Dog aggression is completely different from people aggression. Unless she is behaving the same way with people its clearly a hierarchy problem. Bitches tend to dominate males and be the boss. Its unlikely that she will ever completely stop dominating him but you can lessen this behaviour. For a start, never let her answer the door with you, always lock her and the boy away in another room or a baby gate.also her behaviour is worrying me as im expecting a baby
Do not let visitors fuss her. If she starts jumping off remove her from the room. Only let her say hello when she is calm. Be as strict with your visitors as you are with her; they must ignore her until she is sitting calmly.
Never fuss her if she jumps up at you or someone else, only praise her when all four paws are back on the ground.
Feed her and the boy in separate rooms, feed her after you have eaten, never before. Do not feed her until she is completely calm.
Stimulate her mind as well as her body, play games with her, teach her tricks, make her work for her food. Makes sure she has at least 20 minutes of off lead running a day and socializes with other dogs.
A high quality food will go some way to improve her behaviour.
If she starts becoming 'oblivious' to being told off then you need to shock her, use a high pitched noise-don't say no but say AH-AH. If she also ignores that then bang saucepans together or blow a whistle.
If the other dog is tolerant of her dominate behaviour then he is secure in his position and there is no need to interfere. It is only if she is doing this to strange dogs and people that you need to worry.
