Hi

Jasper has started becoming obsessed with his bone he's usually the sopiest dog in the world wont touch a fly. But whenever my 11month yr old rescue puppy goes to have a look in he shows his teeth and growls at her (baring in mind ive never heard him growl before) and if she does get too close it almost looks like he goes for her but doesn't barking at her and play biting.

i'm not sure this behaviour is normal?

Thank you Smile

It's behaviour you must stop now, what's he like if you try and take the bone away ??

He's fine with us if i or anyone else tries to take it away he just lets us. But not with faith he won't let her anywhere near it untill he gets bored.

so this is quite common behaviour and just letting her know how the land lies, I know you must never let him get possessive with you and should always be able to take anything off him. Maybe someone else can advise you better on stopping it , but at the same time Faith has got to learn that everyone is allowed to have their own rules , up to a point. Can't you give them both a bone together , maybe then they will push each other a bit and learn a little more about sharing, does that sound right ??

Yeah we have tried that but jasper just runs of with it and wont let faith have it haha. I think its to do with Faith changelling jasper as its always what jasper has no matter what it is and then faith gets into the play position barking and changelling him resulting in jasper being defensive n being like this is my toy my terrority, but im just worried that one day he may go for faith when no ones around hes such a good boy but ive never seen him show his teeth or growl before and it does worry me.

Bones are a common trigger for 'resource guarding' (aka food aggression).

You have several choices;

A. If your dog is ok with humans taking the bone
1) You take all bones away from both dogs, thus removing any guarding tendencies
2) You give them both a bone in seperate rooms
3) You teach Faith to leave Jasper alone when he has a bone
4) You keep Faith well away from Jasper when he has a bone

B. If your dog is not ok with humans taking his bone
1) You take all bones away from both dogs, thus removing any guarding tendencies
2) You work with Jasper to improve (and eventually remove) his resource guarding

Until you've worked out which way you're going to tackle this, I would keep Faith well away from Jasper's bones! You could end up with a full on fight.

Either way, you must teach Faith not to take food from Jasper - it's really asking for trouble, even with a submissive dog!

My dog will let people take food out his mouth but when the cat comes near him and he's got a chew he grumbles at her and if he can walks off with the chew. The cats not even interested! Tongues
I can't add anything to the great advice Carylls given you.

My skye can be very food dominant coming from a place where she had to share a small bowl of food between 6brothers IF they were fed!!
So needless to say she feels she has to protect her food, we always with our dogs pick up and move food bowl, treats, and toys from the dogs from pups or as soon as we own them to get them used to it skye however dont have food dominance with us, its with vinnie.
If they both have treats like bones vinnie must eat his on his bed and skye must eat hers in her crate to avoid any confrunation, and when they are finished they both go straight outside for a couple of minutes so skye forgeta about guarding anything that MAY be left .. Small treats i make them sit next to each other amd they have them one at a time skye first then vinnie first then swap etc so skye can ser vinnie getting a treat dont mean she misses out.
Food wise we do the same she eats in her crate he eats not far away then they go outside while i remove bowls etc.
Besr to knuckle down on it and tell him of i he goes for the other dog as its not acceptable, remove the bones as if to say if you cant eat nice you wont have it.
Its working with skye but one slip up and she will try to test you again .. Be firm! And keep to it Smile

I completely agree with Caryll and staffy-lover89

I have only recently fostered a dog when I have another dog in the home. When I first gave them a chew each, I was nervous.

It is OK for one dog to be more dominant than another to a certain extent, but as the pack leader, if you are not happy with the actions of one of your dogs, you need to tell them. I use a quick, firm but gentle, three finger tap and a 'chh" or 'ah!'noise at the same time for correction in these circumstances.

I always find though, that it is the small things that we do to display leadership that help to prevent/overcome food aggression. I know it sounds daft, but not letting them graze, not leaving toys around, walking through gates and doors first, occasionally removing toys and treats from them all help to establish who is boss. You don't need to be super strict and I very rarely raise my voice, just make sure everything is on your terms.
