Protecting the dog from the tree???
Shaz here. I want to put the tree up soon but am worried that Sophie might show an unhealthy interest in the baubles. Other than putting a fire guard round it (not practical or pretty) I am pretty much stumped. Last year we put the tree up but left it pretty much naked
Sophie is now two but I am still not confident she will can be trusted, particularly if something falls off.
I know of a family who had the same problem with their young child so believe it or not they hung the tree from a hook in the ceiling but that seems a bit extreme
What are you lot doing about your trees? ><

Re: Protecting the dog from the tree???
We have an artificial one, but we put it on a table in the corner of the room - Dempsey can't get to it there!

Our one is 6'6" high. Would look a bit daft on the dining table - one heck of a place setting though

Re: Protecting the dog from the tree???
Ours is a 5' one, so it fits on a small circular table quite well!
I suppose the only other thing you can do is restrict access to the room while you're not there.

Re: Protecting the dog from the tree???
Hi Caryll, restricting access is not an option as the lounge is in the centre of the house and the kitchen, bedrooms and bathroom all lead straight off the lounge in different directions
Equally, getting a smaller tree isn't really an option as due to the size of the lounge there is only one possible place it can go which is right beside the armchair

Re: Protecting the dog from the tree???
Watch her like a hawk and give her treats every time she moves away from it? Maybe you should've put it up a few months early to give her time to get bored of it other than that, not sure really.

We have trouble with Kenny stealing the balls, it worries me that may choke, so we now only have balls on the top half

Re: Protecting the dog from the tree???
It is Caley's first christmas and she has only attempted to get to the tree twice, she is bored with it now..altough I did make sure I left the very bottom of the tree with no baubles on it...so far so good

I have a big real one, Moo doesn't touch it, she has a sniff of the decs and I just say no no. She is left at home with it when I'm work also. Its your choice really, trust her, or have a half naked christmas tree

Re: Protecting the dog from the tree???
We just put our tree up (it's an artificial one) and decorate it, Rocky has never bothered with it, thankfully, so no need for any extra caution. The only thing we did do different was to leave off the candy canes.

Put ours up last night ( 6ft artificial ) Bacchus not that bothered but has knocked a few bits and pieces off when passing in pursuit of his ball. But wouldn't leave him unattended.

Ours never bother out tree and it is a reasonably sized one. It is in a room they aren't spending much time in so that probably is most of it.

Re: Protecting the dog from the tree???
Last year Polly's "Leave" command got used a lot she finally got the message a couple of days before we took it down.
This year we have got Charlie who at times is amazingly good and at others is a total brat We never leave them in the living room if we go out anyway and when we are about we can hear if they go near the tree, last year I bought some decorations that are big metal bells and hung them all around the bottom of the tree
Our old demented collie just loves to sit and watch the lights flash

We've only just put the tree up! Zoey couldn't care less, she hasn't even taken an interest. However, given half a chance, she'd take out the singing fat santa!

Re: Protecting the dog from the tree???
We put our real tree up last weekend, not weekend just gone, and we let Pixee join in, have a sniff of the baubles etc. (She is a rescue dog and her first Christmas with us) She watched us decorate the tree, had a good sniff of the tree and has not bothered with it one bit, ever leave her the run of the house, tree included when we got out, and still all in one bit when we get home, how lucky are we, so pleased with Pixee, although she will have a sniff now and then, she just ignores it.

Well the tree has been up a few days and apart from an initial sniff Sophie has ignored it.

Re: Protecting the dog from the tree???
I have a 6ft tree and it has been pulled over at least 5 times now (and i really should re-decorate it.
All we have done to keep him away is to squeak as many toys as we can find, so his attention is diverted in every direction possible, that way the tree seems less intersting!
