Protecting Your Home and Puppies

When you know the day your puppy will be coming home it is time to begin your preparation. It can be be very stressful for a puppy to leave it's mother so prepare a quiet corner for it to settle in to. Learning to know what is safe for your puppy is part of it growing up but you can help by removing the worst of the dangers before he/she arrives this also helps to keep your belongings and home safe.

  • Put all breakables out of reach.
  • Remove any plants that could be poisonous and remember plants can cause upset tummies.
  • Tidy all electrical cables and hide from view as a puppy chewing through a live cable could be fatal.
  • Put all shoes away if you do not want to end up with only one from a pair, any pieces they might swallow could cause blockages.
  • Fit a fireguard to any open fires.
  • Check bookshelves, especially bottom ones for any fav books you do not want damaged.
  • Make sure all kitchen scraps are disposed of immediately especially any chicken bones.
  • Be carefull with overhanging tablecloths as puppies can clear a table with no effort at all.
  • Hoover regularly to make sure there are no small items on the carpet your puppy could swallow.
  • Empty ashtrays frequently and keep unused cigarettes and matches out of reach.
  • Any broken toys should be discarded as any filling or small parts could be dangerous.
  • Fit safety gates or block stairs as a clumsy puppy can very easily take a spill resulting in serious injury.
  • Remember to puppy proof your garden as well - block up holes in fences, gates and drains
  • Buy some stain and odour remover to protect your carpets, get rid of smells and prevent repeat 'accidents' while your puppy is learning not to do his business in the house.

Try to keep your puppy in one room with you so if they do attempt to do something they should not, you can say no immediately.
