Hi i need some advice on Charlie he`s 17wks and he lives with 5 cats ages range from 10+ years to 8 months . He`s only been here about 10 days but is chasing our cats still i was hoping he`d have clamed down abit by now .
Will he just get used to them being around over time or is there anything i can do to help ease the situation ?
Thank you in advance for any help Wink

Its not the same but I've had my pup for 3 and a half months and him and my other dog still don't get on! Whenever he goes near her she barks and growls, think its just something that takes time!

I hoping he`ll just get bored of them slapping his nose and leave them alone

Its probabilly more curiousity, but your cats are not going to allow your dog to sniff their behinds unless of course you hold them, not allow him to touch them or nudge them with his nose he only needs to sniff, another is a very strong leave command (is a must with all dogs anyways)
could try having him on a lead, give him a correction etc.

I have ten cats and three dogs , my cats were used to dogs before my staffys arrived as pups so they quickly settled . You need to stop him chasing the cats by using a line and using child gates to allow the cats to avoid him if they wish. If he is being taught to "leave" then he can get a treat each time he leaves a cat and he will learn just like he learns everything else.A good time for me to teach them was when the cats all sat on the worktop eating and the puppies had to sit and wait for them to finish whilst getting a few treats.Of course if the cats are like mine they will eventually play with the dog just watch he doesn't land on them!

It is difficult - I have a 14 yr old cat who absolutly hates Diesel, she will spit, hiss, swipe and box at her if she gets within sniffing distance, however Diesel just wants to play. Love Struck
Last week the cat came in, walked past Diesel and Diesel leapt on her ! nearly crushed the frail old cat, I had a mini heart attack and Diesel wondered what all the fuss was about.

We tell Diesel to 'leave' when she gets to close to Meg now, and it does work, I think my cat is too old to be bothered about staffy cuddles, she tolerates Diesel...just ! but i cant see them ever being best mates lol

My Ty if given the chance would chase the cat (the cat chases Kaos lol) we are lucky that sugar (cat) rarely runs, she stands her ground! We found as has previously been said a very good leave it command is the best thing. We also make it very clear to the dogs that sugar is boss, sugar gets fed first and they wait till she has finished before eating (sounds mean i no lol). They no they will get told off if they go over board with her....most of the time her and kaos snuggle up and sleep together but Ty can be very rough and if im honest i dont trust him with her lol. But god does she ever know shes top dog (or cat lol) she waltz's in swishing her tail in thier faces and rubbing up and down them and the poor dogs no they cant do anything bar lick her lol. I think its good for them, all men need to learn a bit of self control Tongues
