scaring the cats
Well I have brought Elwood home today Now the problem I have is that he is scaring my cats by running around and looking for them. He has chased them into the back yard and one of them wont come back in the house. The other is in my bedroom and the other hiding on the chair under the table ! He doesnt want to hurt tham but wants to play! I have tried the harness and saying NO! but what else can I do?

Re: scaring the cats
Put a baby gate at the bottom of the stairs so that the cats have somewhere safe to run to, and keep on with the "No" & "leave!".

Re: scaring the cats
agree with caryll. the cats need somewhere to run to that they know they are safe. but i must admit i did when i first read it but then thought the poor cat doesnt know the dogs only playing.
just keep on the NO command and he will get it eventualy. bless his heart its all new to him right now he'll settle and stop chasing them soon

Re: scaring the cats
The cats were used to your previous dog? so they will get used to Elwood soon enough and i'm sure Elwood will settle if you teach him not to chase the cats . The baby gate idea helps and don't leave him loose and under temptation if you go out

Re: scaring the cats
Sorry never had a cat so no use really. Would go with the stair gate though and give it a try.

Re: scaring the cats
My dog wants to....ahem...play? with the cats too but i taught her very early on LEAVE and it transfers to any situation. i think NO is more suited to things like "no, don't get on the couch" but maybe im mad thinking they can tell the difference between the words lol

Re: scaring the cats
IMO, just choose a word you're comfortable with and go with it. no!, leave!, etc. Elwood is going to learn, he just needs time. and if he's anything like my dearly departed White German Shepherd, Molly, maybe some help now and again protecting himself from the cats
