Scaring small dog owners!
Our 6.5 month old girl Kota plays very well with dogs/puppies that are bigger than her and shows no aggression at all to any dogs but has began to get a little bit too rough with small dogs when playing. I often have to go and grab her (and take her home) when a small dog arrives at the park because although I know she is only playing she often puts her mouth around their neck (she isn't biting down only mouthing but the owners obviously get very concerned when they see a staffy with it's mouth around their little dogs neck!).
The smaller dogs will follow her around wanting to play so she's obviously not hurting them but does anyone know if this is something she should grow out of?
Thanks, Steph

Re: Scaring small dog owners!
I doubt it's something that she will grow out of; staffies play rough! I don't allow Biscuit to play with small dogs, she just gets to over excited and doesn't know her own strength, she's knocked my friends lab down before running into him! I'm not overly keen on dog park socialization in general, but if it's something you're happy with I'd just ensure your putting in boundaries, teaching an "enough" command when she's getting too excited and taking her out of he situation to do a few minutes of obedience (just sits, downs, any other easy trick you've taught) and then back to calm play.

Re: Scaring small dog owners!
The only small dog Bane can play with reasonably well is a french bulldog at the park. He is very boisterous for his size but is always getting rolled over and knocked down first...when they first met Bane and him were the same sizeĀ
Otherwise we try and stick to bigger dogs too If there are some dog owners that you speak to, then as long as she doesn't hurt the little one and the owner is ok with them playing and understands that she is just playing and not trying to hurt them then I don't see a problem. As Rachel said teaching her "enough" would probably be a good idea as they do get carried away.

Damn! Thought it might be something she would grow out of once she calms down a little! And the worst thing is that 90% of the dogs that are around the area are little fluffy ones, they are always the most keen to play with her too (much to their owners horror! Haha). She always comes back once called (as long as we have a treat) but once she goes back she does the exact same thing again so looks like it might just be something I'm always going to have to watch out for

Re: Scaring small dog owners!
She's a staffie lol! But that's what we love about them Biscuit is great with small dogs in the home, but prey drive kicks in when they run and she will chase and knock them over. Her Yorkie friend has become pretty sturdy but I'm always watching her around him. Bull breeds won't ever be your labs of the dog park, but they can be friendly, playful dogs! Just don't realise their strength sometimes!

Yeah I would let Daisy play with a small dog she is far too rough! Luckily they don't interest her!!

Staffords are also very fast and have the worst braking system ever (i.e. No Brakes) and they are so clumsy! I use the word "Gently" and that works for us (for a while anyway lol).

Suki plays with a few small dogs and she does the exact same thing. We always make sure that the owners know this is just how she plays. She has learned over time to not be as rough with the little ones though and knows if they don't want to play but that took a couple of years of going to the park everyday.

Re: Scaring small dog owners!
I've found it's been really helpful having a friend with a larger and older dog that my pup can play with. Especially one with good manners that can set an example. We have a 5 month old boy who loves pouncing on others dogs backs and mouthing their jowls - he's truly strange. But with the help from our friends lab, he's learning what's right and wrong in play time.
