cats
hi i have a 6 month old staffy she is a brilliant pup, someone has told me she may have killed a cat. the only thing i find weird is i ave 2 of my own which she has shown no sign of aggression, only chases them and tries to play.
the main thing i would like to know is......
if a staffy or dog, does kill a cat or another animal will it be more likely to do it again?
i have been told they will by a few people just want more input, bot sure whether to be worried or not.
important note!!!! missy will not be re homed due to this!!!!!
thanks

Re: cats
Hi there, it does sound strange if she's ok with your cats but definitely keep and eye on her if she has a high prey drive. Daisy doesn't seem to so I'm not much help I'm afraid, others will be though come and say hi when you get chance

Re: cats
Chasing cat or any small furries is a natural thing for dogs of any breed, don't let them worry you unnecessarily xx

My dog deffo no to be trusted with cats. It's a pity, but it's how he is and we take no chances. It's possible that he could manage to tolerate in time, with a lot of practice. However, any cat that had to put up with him while he's learning sure wouldnt be having a good time.

Re: cats
some dogs can learn to live with cats and they become part of the pack yet if they see one in the street they may go for it.
marleys brother lives with cats and gheckos no problem, his best friend a mastiff cross staff lives with two chinchillas no problem.
Marley killed my neighbours cat last year and it was horrid, not in the way he did it but just because he did. he has insane prey drive coming from a terrier mum and a sibe dad and a grab and shake was all it took.
its not something i like talking about alot because of the stigma attached to it. Heard all the crap about him progressing to ripping babies from cots etc etc yada yada from my neighbour and the police had no idea what to do. ddawatch primed me and i knew where to go.
what people fail to remember is that prey drive isnt the same as agression and that cats have a prey drive x 10 of dogs but no one bats an eyelid when they bring in dead birds mice etc.
my boy has regrettably dispatched a cat, a fox and squrilles yet still has my utmost trust when out on a run as a lead dog with flawless ability to think for himself while listening to my commands. would i trust him around small furries...no way but would i trust him to lead me through a tricky ride...oh yes! hes my rock

Re: cats
Agree Nath, Moo's squirrel count is in double figures - as would the cat count if given the opportunity but when I had the Hamster she could run all over her

Re: cats
supposedly if they smell like home they don't see them as prey, never forgotten when I lived at home 16ish and I had a hamster, mum called saying it had escaped (I was out in town, very embarrassing), the cat had found it on the stairs and was howling, mother hated rodents so wouldn't pick her up called me!

Re: cats
I have 5 cats and 2 staffies, both dogs chased the cats for a few months when they first met them, and the cats gave them a telling off when they got too close. Now they are all best friends and sleep together and wash eachother. So they can def learn to love cats

Re: cats
Lula alright with are cat Tigger just wants to sniff and play with him. I don`t leave them alone in a room together because Tigger not afraid to give a good swipe if she gets to close. If i`m walking her and she sees another cat its a growl and a bark and she chased next door cat. There is always a lot of noise if she spots a squirrel
