Steve, the price of houses & the cost of mortgages is astronomical. For a lot of people (yes, even those on £40k) the mortgage payments take up most of their available income. They've been paying in to the pension for a long time and now they're told that they will have to pay more & get less. It just isn't right.
if you cant afford your mortgages on £40,000 a year then you should sell up and get a house you can well afford.
Steve, have you seen the cost of houses? I'm not saying they can't afford the mortgage, but it gives them very little left over, especially when they're already paying into what they thought was a good pension. I'm sure that if they'd known that this would happen, they would never have started to pay into it, and would have started their own savings plan.
Put it this way, if you were to open a savings account, and paid a regular amount in with all sorts of 'guarantees' by the bank as to how much interest it'll earn for your retirement, and all of a sudden the bank tells you that you'll have to pay in 50% more each month, but they're going to slash the interest rates by half so you'll get less money at the end of the day, you wouldn't be very happy!

sorry you all living in different world to me, i've ask my mum if she was working and earning £40,000 she just said she would be saving atleast £10,000 a years x by 60 years = £600,000 plus interest you would make over the years and that amount you wouldn't be bothered about your state pension..
Re: strike on wednesday
I don't know if your mum owns her house (and I don't want to know as it's none of my business), but if she does, then she likely bought it some years ago & didn't pay the sort of money that is being asked now. I live in an area that is fairly cheap for houses, but a 2 bedroom house round here is still nearly £100,000! The monthly payments on a mortgage for that sort of sum is extremely high, and leaves very little extra cash to play around with.
If it's rented, then the monthly amount is nowhere near the mortgage payments a lot of people have to pay out.

Re: strike on wednesday
Its irrelivent how much you earn if you pay into the system you have a right to take out
In a ideal world we would all have 20,000 a year pay the same for a house ,car, bills and we would all be happy
I must be a greedy c*w cause I have 3 houses and still want what Ive paid into for 40 years my pension

No, gem, not greedy - you just want what you've worked hard to pay in for!

OOOOOOhhhhh hot debate topic! Love it!
I don't live in the UK now, but my husband is from there and we both worked there, both full time, earning good money and we couldn't afford lots of things. I am a saver and am very good with money, so is my husband... the thing is, you live to what you earn. It's all well and good earning good money, but you also work hard for that money and you want to enjoy it. I'm not saying go crazy and live the high life on the bank's money, but enjoying what you earn and expecting that what you put into a retirement fund is going to go towards your retirement... whether you earn minimum wage or you're rich like Oprah Winfrey Everyone has a right no matter how much they earn to expect that the money you have put in is going towards your retirement, is not being skimmed in fees and charges by the government. People have the right regardless of income to have the say of how their incomes are spent, and we don't know how much all these people have put into their pension plans... It's a very messed up world we live in at the moment and at the moment, I think the entire world has felt the pinch.

Re: strike on wednesday
I was trying to be diplomatic and not offend anyone, as everyone has a right to an opinion on the state of the global economy, because the effects are so far reaching and impact the majority of the world's population. I support pay rises for teachers, nurses, firefighters, police, paramedics and everyone that serves the general publicbecause without them we would live in a very ignorant and deprived place! But, in saying that, it is also just my view point and I respect that everyone is different.. It's just, personally, I can appreciate what these people do and the amount that they do and to get people saying they earn enough and are being greedy can hurt. Yes we all pay taxes, and yes there are flaws in every country's government and systems they have in place (immigration, welfare, benefits, pensions etc) but as the very cliched saying goes: "Don't judge a man (or woman) until you've walked a mile in their shoes"
LOL... I really am on my soap box this evening... someone tell me to * up
