i think everybody is striking on wednesday, boarder people, teacher, fireman, nurses the goverment said it going cost the country half a billion
Re: strike on wednesday
It's rediculous I have to pay for my pension if I want one but these people have got a good one and they are striking cause they have to pay a bit more in times of hardship and they can retire far more earlier than me who might I add are paying for their pension
Sorry if. Have offended anyone but it gets right in my nerves

Re: strike on wednesday
i see its the pension. i think it has something to do wth the final salary pension. pete had this a while a go but they never went on strike for it. basicaly a lot of people have been paying the final salary pension which means when they retire they get the salary at the time of retirement. but the governement put so much tax on it that companies cannot afford to offer it any more so are putting the premiums up to keep up with it instead of getting rid of it. sorry but the government are hiking up the tax on just bout everything and its the simple person in the street (aka us) that are paying for it not he companies that are being taxed. take the untilities for instance. the government has put more tax on the gas rigs that companies are putting the prices up on our bills to pay for it. the governemtn know its us that suffer in the end but they want the extra money. well sorry but this probably will offend but if the country is that skint stop giving money away to other countries let them sort out their own mess. if this country has a national debt of billions then where is the money coming from to give away.

Im in this pension Ive just frozen it to buy another property because its pants dont beleive everything you read why should people pay more into the pension to get less out and retirement dates are set the same for everyone.
These people have already taken job cuts on essential services and have to make up for job cuts and give the same service and pay has been frozen for 3 years so not taking into account inflation.
Plus the final insult is job ivaluation were service isnt taken into account and all are put on the minimum pay scale irrelivent of experience and service how much more can be thrown at these people.
Im not able to strike because I work in essential services but have to say I think they have to make a stand somehow

It's called solidarity, Steve. That's what unions are all about - every member helps every other member.

Steve wrote:I dont care what its call some of these people who are strike gets good enough wage!!
They're not necessarily striking for themselves (and it isn't wages, it's pensions), they are showing support for others. As I said, solidarity. It's the way unions work, and it's what makes them powerful.

I have not had a pay rise for 5 years, therefore I am much worse off than I was 5 years ago. I do not contribute to a pension (cant afford it) I have always worked and always contributed and I am sure there will hardly be any state pension when I get to retire at probally nearly 70. If I went on strike I would be sacked and replaced. I have got no solidarity not in a union. Just work for a very small company but at least I have a job. Is that fair.

Life isn't fair, but we are going through extremely tough times at the moment, going into another recession,I didn't think we had come out the last one.....
Lots of jobs going, companies going under, high unemployment, etc etc.....
I do sympathise with why they are taking industrial action, but at least these people have a job,my son doesn't and his chances of getting employment are extremely slim at the moment.
My daughter had an exam tomorrow and that's now got to be moved, working parents have got to sort out childcare for there children, not to mention the actual damage it's going to do,cuts have to be made, simple as......
We as a country are all paying the price in one way or another.

No, of course it isn't fair. But if everyone just sits there and says "It's not fair" but doesn't do anything about it (I'm not including you in that, btw, cause you wouldn't be able to do anything about it!) then nothing will get done & we'll go back to the victorian ethos of working for 12 hours a day, 7 days a week with 2 days holiday a year! Someone has to stand up for what they believe in.

Its irrelivant how much salary you get you pay a percentage of your income into the pension pot this is for your future and now the government want to take another 50% from you. You get no more money work longer years the pensions are on track so the money is building for when you retire. It will be used to pay off the deficit how is that okay.

Lynne, anyone can join a union. I used to be in one until I was made redundant, then couldn't afford it any longer, obviously.

Agreed. Why should Joe public have to pay for government/banker screwups? They should pay the bankers and mp's less and make it up that way - its their mess.

Re: strike on wednesday
Bu the recession was caused by the bankers messing up and that's the deficit the government are wanting to cover. So making the public pay more money into pensions that they won't get to cover the deficit is ok? I don't think so.

Re: strike on wednesday
the recession lasted longer becasue alot of people in the uk can't live within theirs means.
Re: strike on wednesday
A national health worker has just been on the news, he earns £40,000 a year and at the moment will get a pension of £18,000 plus a lump sum of £58,000 a year.
He has been told that he will now get £14,000 a year plus the £58,000 and to get that he will have to pay in a couple of hundred pounds extra a year and will have to retire a later.
He is going on strike, well excuse me I would gladly take that pension and not strike.

Agree, also run up debts, they can't afford to pay back, banks also have to take responsilbilty down to there poor lending, and obviously the price of fuel is hitting normal working families hard, because when fuel goes up everything goes up.

they need to learn to manager their money better like the rest of us. if i was getting 40,000 a year 10,000 of that would be a in saving account or whatever for my retirement..
Re: strike on wednesday
The £58,000 is a death in service lump sum so you got to die before you retire to get itlynne wrote:A national health worker has just been on the news, he earns £40,000 a year and at the moment will get a pension of £18,000 plus a lump sum of £58,000 a year.

The £18,000 is the yearly amout of pension in his pot but hes paying every week and will have to pay another half of the amount to now get £14,000 and work more years so the government has said we will steal £4,000 a year you pay us another half of what your already paying oh and work another few years extra Good deal ?

If anybody who get paid £40,000 plus that dont have a good retirement need shootting... i would support anybody who on £20,000 or less a year... it's struggle but i cant support anybody who on £40,000 plus a year dont matter how much study they did becasue they should been clever enough to put atleast £10,000 away each year.

No, the government ran up debts it couldn't afford!

That has nothing whatsoever to do with the recession. The recession was caused by poor banking practice & bad government.

If you watched news night the the other month the money bloke was on it and stat if joe public didn't have 3/4 cards max up the recession wouldn't of last this long becasue the bank would be able to lead money to people

The trouble is, Steve, I think you're missing the point. The government want these workers to pay more in to get less out. It isn't a matter of not being able to afford the extra, it's the fact that they will be getting less when they retire even though they are having to pay more. Plus, of course, they don't get the state pension, which they are also contributing towards in the N.I.
Never mind. The strike will go ahead, and there's nothing anyone on this forum can do about it.

Steve, the price of houses & the cost of mortgages is astronomical. For a lot of people (yes, even those on £40k) the mortgage payments take up most of their available income. They've been paying in to the pension for a long time and now they're told that they will have to pay more & get less. It just isn't right.

if you cant afford your mortgages on £40,000 a year then you should sell up and get a house you can well afford.
