The time has come...
Well, at 6 and a bit months my little girl is now a "woman" :-<
Just a quick question really, how long is it from when they start bleeding until they stop being in heat? I don't fancy me or the OH walking her and being bombarded by horny dogs!

I don't know really as I have had males mostly and a spayed female. However, you might try britches. I don't envy trying to keep her in the whole time. Hopefully someone will have a better solution pronto.

Re: The time has come...
Only ever had boys so no help really sorry. I would say though obviously keep her on lead at all times and try to walk either early morning or later at night when less dogs will be around

I have never taken my bitches out whilst in heat, risk of infection and of course male dogs.I keep them confined to the back garden, but supervised.
A season usually lasts around 3/4 weeks with there fertile time around 10/12 days + but every bitch is different.

Re: The time has come...
I walked Moo when she was in season it was ok until one male dog off lead took a liking to her. It was a rather large dog and I couldn't do anything to get it away, and there where no owners present. I was in bits and trying to carry her but this dog just wouldn't go. Eventually one of the park wardens saw what was happening and bundled us into his van, took the dog away and gave the owner a telling off, to which she replied " She shouldn't have been walking it in season anyway". I was like wtf! But was actually quite shaken by it.
The season lasts 4 weeks approx and they are most appealing to males about week 2-3 but I would be very carefull walking her, although you do still have to take them out (well I did as I don't have a garden).
Just be aware, keep her on lead and be one step ahead of any cr*p owners that have there intact males off lead. Xx

Re: The time has come...
I wouldn't consider myself to be a crap owner and I own both sexes,my boy has excellent recall and is allowed offlead, and I wouldn't know if there was an inseason bitch around and why should he have to stay onlead. No amount of recall will get a dog back if he takes a liking to an inseason bitch as natural instincts kick in.janey wrote:

I also wouldn't want to be responsible for a dog having an accident by crossing a road etc to get to my inseason bitch.

Not aimed at you hence why I said cr*p owners who aren't even in eye shot of where there dog is, let alond being in a position to be able to call the dog away or even put it back on lead.
It was pretty scary and yes it was the owners fault for not having control of let alone even being able to see where the dog was!

Re: The time has come...
A season will last for approximately 3 weeks (sometimes 4 weeks, but 3 is the average) and the really dangerous part is the last half. That's when not only will dogs be interested in her, she'll be interested in them!
Personally, I never allowed my in season bitches off lead unless I was 100% certain there were no other dogs around, and even then I'd be watching all around for anybody appearing in the distance!
During the last week/10 days I'd keep her on a lead at all times, even if there are no dogs around. You just can't be too careful!

Thanks everyone! Where we live there's not TOO many dogs anyway, so it shouldn't be too bad. We'll just keep her close out on walks or in the garden. We have a 5 foot fence but you never know eh? lol
