mystery colored fur

We just noticed our 3 year old staffy has a one inch x 5-6 inch band of rust color fur under his neck. It was solid white.

It did not come from his collar, or contact with anything else that we know of. It doesn't rub off with towel and water. It really looks like the fur changed color. I have never heard of a dog changing fur color this old.

Can anyone help with this mystery?

If I can't figure it out he is going to the vet to see what he thinks.

He otherwise seems healthy.
