Newbie looking for any advice
Hi all
Hubby and I are currently considering getting a puppy/dog. We have seen endless adverts for all ages, sizes etc and are quite confused.
We are due to go and see a 17 wk old pup later but what questions do we need to ask? How do we know it will be the right dog for us? what if we get a bad feeling? the questions are endless, so any help is appreciated

It's from a family that can't keep him. He's causing illness to the child. We are due to go to their house.

Re: Newbie looking for any advice
Aww good luck to be honest there isn't much too ask, he's 17 weeks old so still such a baby.
You could ask wether he is kc registered, not that it really matters when taking one on, you'll need to know the vets history, jabs worming and so on.
Any training can be started afresh with you, but you could ask how his training is going. Toilet training, what food he is on, does he travel well, is he crate trained .............
You'll know when you see him if its right, well I'm a believer in that. Don't be affraid to ask anything at all, its there responcibility to let you know everything.

Thank you. She's told me so much info already and reasons for having to give him up. My husband is a little worried about doing it private rather than through a rescue centre

Hi and welcome from me and Rocky. Well done you for taking on the puppy. Cannot really add much more than previous posts. Make sure you have many toys to stimulate him. Ask how he is being fed/ what type of food etc.
Good luck. We want to see pics, now don't forget !!

Welcome aboard! I got my Saxon from a private family that could no longer care for him when he was 5 months old and he is the best dog anyone could ask for! It sounds like you are prepared. My only advice is to take a ridiculous amount of pictures! They grow up soo fast!

Re: Newbie looking for any advice
Hope all goes well with the pup
I would just ask how his toilet training is going, what they feed him on, has he been treated for fleas and worms, has he had his jabs. Mostly, just so you know where you stand.
Hope this helps

Thank you all for your 'welcomes' and very helpful posts. . Think i've been on this site ALL afternoon
I'm new to owning this type of dog and can't wait to get to know everyone. We have had to reschedule the visit until tomorrow, so if all goes well, we could have a puppy this time tomorrow

Re: Newbie looking for any advice
Hi All
Well, i'd been talking to them lots, by email, before we went and they explained the situation in full and I told her all about us and we were all happy.
Today, I text her to let her know we were on our way. All was fine. Hubby and I arrived and the teenage daughter opened door with this gorgeous little pup in hand. She passed him over to me and nothing else was said. I turned to hubby and he asked where her mum was and she'd had to nip out to the chemist. We said no problem we'd wait but was told that they weren't sure what time she'd be back.
By this time she'd already offered us a hand to the car with his bits and pieces (which was already waiting at the side of the door)?!
They seemed confused why we wanted to see the mother. We asked if there was anyone else we could speak to as we had some questions. She said her dad was in bed, but she'd go and get him - he came down fully dressed and didn't look tired at all. He denied knowing anything about the dog as his wife had sorted it all out.
So, the dad went upstair and phoned his wife (???) and came back to say she wouldn't be back until about 3 (this was at at 12.30). We said we'd nip out for a while and speak to him later on.
Hubby and I already knew once we left we wouldn't be going back. The puppy was perfect and looked so well cared for but I just can't understand that a so-called loved family pet was being handed over in this way - we both feel like it was just money and the story was just that . . . a story.
Feel so bad for the dog

£200 . . They said they spent 300 buying him. He was also a pedigree, and had all injections (apparently, they had vets paper for injections, but nothing else) and he'd been micro chipped.

Re: Newbie looking for any advice
I feel really bad for both the dog and you. But I think you probably did the right thing, it sounds way too suspicious to me.
The thing that rings alarm bells is the basic reluctance - reluctance to show the bitch, reluctance to let you see the woman who was arranging it all etc.
Keep looking, there will be a wonderful staffy out there somewhere who will fit into your life like a glove! Have you been to any of the rescue centres?

Re: Newbie looking for any advice
I paid £140 for Moo, I don't know her past at all, apart from 3 homes before me, she was 10mnths ish. Now I certainly don't agree with this but if the family just honestly can't cope then you are never going to get a better explaination from a rescue. If that makes sense.
The dog willl only end up in care anyway, but you are right to trust your instincts if thats what suits you.
Sorry it didn't work out this time Xx

Thats a awfull thing to have to put yourself through what kind of people are prepared to hand over a puppy like this OMG But dont dispare there are good breeders out there the puppies will be more expensive but you will have a lifetime of advise and support from the right one research them if they ask you loads of questions and want to do a home check its cause they care.
If money is tight contact your local staffordshire bull terrier rescue who will help you find the perfect dog/puppy for you good luck

Thanks for all your replies, advice & kind words.
To be honest, money isn't the issue but as soon as we saw his pic, we wanted to go and see him. And if all else had gone well, we would of had him.
Today, we are off to visit a breeder, who have the parents of the pups as pets. They are just 8 weeks old and i'm so excited
Will update you all this afternoon

Re: Newbie looking for any advice
Yes good luck but dont forget to arm yourself with loads of questions and if your not getting any from the breeder back then they couldnt give a monkeys were the pup lives and who with if they are prepared to hand over a puppy to a total stranger then what does that tell you.
First impresions with both mum and dad and if you think they are nice and healthy.
You should ask if the pups have seen a vet the worming program and check they are all healthy and happy.
You should never be paying a lot of money for a unregistered puppy with no insurance and one that has no breed history or health checks .
All pups are cute and all dogs are loving loyal and no amount of money makes one better than the other but people out there who are living off the backs of breeding there dogs for money we should all try to avoid and help this breed get back to full health and not persicuted because of crap and over breeding.
SORRY for going on I need to shut up

Reading this thread I'm keen to hear the outcome of your visit to the breeder. I feel sorry for the other little puppy if the family don't seem to care enough to be there at the arranged time for you to visit.

Re: Newbie looking for any advice
Hmm sounds very strange, I really do feel for that pup and hope he doesn't end up in bad hands.
We rehomed Tinkerbell weeks ago privately. The family that owned her live just down the road, same street but 30 odd doors down. We saw her on gumtree for £50 so Ian went to go and see her one evening when the kids were in bed. The ad said she was 11 months old and was being rehomed because of a relationship breakdown. When Ian got there to see her, the guy explained his girlfriend had walked out on him and the kids, and that he was due to move into a flat with them where Tink wasn't allowed.
Ian saw her and decided she was a lovely dog, the house had children's toys over the floor and she wasn't bothered by them. She was great with the kids and because our two children are the same age as his he brought her home. When he got her back we checked her vet papers etc that had been passed over with her. Turned out she was 6 weeks when they had her, dates now mean she is actually 16 months not 11. Not sure why he lied about her age, and she had only had the first part of her vaccination so needed the whole course again. And she was in season the night we had her but not sure if the previous owner knew this, as we weren't told.
She has turned out to be a great dog, we have no problems with her, she is fantastic with the kids and very calm in the house. But we saw his girlfriend the other day who asked how the dog was. She also said she had just had virging installed, and the family is still living in the house together. So we are unsure of why she was rehomed and why they lied about her!
Good luck with the search for a pup!

Well, yesterday went very quick and i'm pleased to announce we have a new addition to the family . . YaY . . and this morning I definitely feel like a new mum!
The breeders were lovely people, told us everything we needed to know (and more)! We got the papers etc and, apart from being tired, we're all very happy.
Will post the pics shortly! x

She's called Chloe . . We already knew that we'd have a boy or girl and we chose the one we fell in love with, rather than the sex.
She's gorgeous, cheeky, playful and quite well trained already . . She's already following my son round everywhere, which he's loving.
It was awful hearing her cry in the night, but we didn't crack

That's what I thought , but after seeing her dad I knew she could be a big girl , the guy who sold her to us said that everyone who came for the pups wanted to take the dad home he was perfect in every way .
