Newbie in need of advice Empty Newbie in need of advice

Post by johnsq22 Wed Apr 25 2012, 22:59

Hello everyone my name is Tia and my owners are called John and Carol.I am new to all this and would really relish any advice that you can give to my new mum and dad. I'm 8 years old and am problems with one of my lower canines cutting into my gum at the top right in the middle of my upper canine tooth making my gum look very red and sore. John has been trying to clean my teeth with a liver flavoured toothpaste using a real toothbrush for dogs and then afterwards putting tooth gel all along my teeth . Now my problem is that I hate the toothbrushes and have so far just chomped through 4 of them making then unusable anymore but at the same time also injuring 2 of Johns knuckles. Is or are there any suggestions that anyone can give to make things more pleasant for me (Tia) and my dad john please as I really want my teeth and gums to look good again... Thank you all in advance ,, Tia Big Grin

I would try brushing her teeth after she has had a walk and just gone to sleep. Also is there a procedure the vet could do all at once to correct the problem?

Hi Tia and welcome to the forum from Rocky and her Mummy.

Maybe you could ask your Mum & Dad to take you along to your local vet where she/he can take a good look at your teeth and decide what can be done for them.

Hi & welcome!

Sounds like you have a 'tight' or 'instanding' canine - quite a common problem with bull breeds. My Dempsey has the same thing!

You need to get your mum & dad to take you to the vet - he can either remove the tooth (if it's really bad) or file it down a bit so it doesn't dig into your upper gum.

Newbie in need of advice Empty Newbie in need of advice -- update regarding Tia --

Post by johnsq22 Fri Apr 27 2012, 01:30

Wow, May I say a really BIG THANK YOU to everyone on here for not only the welcome that has been received from everyone but also for the very sound advice given to me by lots of people.
We took Tia (my little baby -as I call her) to the vets regarding her canine tooth and to my astonishment he said " that it is a trait in Staffie's as they get older " she has been given some antibiotics to take for 10 days and then she should be fine again. The problem was caused by a huge cow bone that she's been given by myself and a very small splinter piece had got stuck between the tooth and gum at the back of her canine , and it had caused the gum to become infected.Henceforth she won't be given bones anymore. Much to the relief to Tia , my wife and my son , I dont think I could have forgiven myself had I caused her more serious damage by giving a bone. She has had her teeth cleaned (I never knew how expensive that actually is - but she is worth every penny)and is now fast asleep in bed with my wife , I'm demoted to the sofa for the night.Once again I'd like to say thank you to everyone :- From one very relieved Staffie owner or does she own me/us ?.. I will download some photos of her when I learn how to do it .. Tia + John + Carol thumbs up
