RIP Rusty.

This morning, Rusty, Sprocket & Spanner managed to get out of the gate while someone was driving in, after about 30mins, I realised that they had gone AWOL, I went outside to look for them, some guy tells me ‘they went that way!’

I get in the car to go and look for them, I didn’t have to look far, I found them two houses down, Sprocket running around and Rusty lying down, struggling for breath and non responsive, Spanner is nowhere in sight. I pick him up and put him in the car, no reaction, his eyes are open, his tongue is blue… I think he might be choking on something, I open his mouth and try to see if there is anything blocking his airways, his gag reflex still works, he bites down on my finger…hard, there is blood, I barely notice. I check him for obvious signs of injury… nothing, why isn’t he reacting????!.

I race off to the vet, carry him inside and lay him on the table, I rattle off an explanation of the situation… they promptly kick me out and get to work.

The vet comes out after a few minutes, It might be a ruptured diaphragm, he might have been hit by a car, he might have been hit by a person, he might have been bitten by a snake….WTF!!!! I feel like kicking 12 different kinds of snot out of him, they have to stabilise him first before they can do an x-ray.

I have to go find Spanner, lucky someone picked him up not too far from our house. All legs and ears, tail wagging!

I get back home and try to think what could have possibly happened, half an hour has gone past, I call the vet to check on Rusty, they say his breathing is stabilising but he is still non-responsive, we just have to wait and see how he reacts to the anti shock drip they put him on. I have a bad feeling…

An hour or two later, I drive off to the vet… ‘we were trying to call you’ they say… ‘your dog has died…, I’m sorry.’…. I feel… I have no f*@king idea how I feel.

I’m sorry Rusty, I feel like I let you down, I was supposed to look after you, you weren’t great at conversation but I loved you and you loved me and that’s all that mattered….
