Teaching the command 'OFF' Empty Teaching the command 'OFF'

Post by MrWells Wed Sep 21 2011, 13:56

hi, little busters training is going good from the advice already given to me on here, but he seems to have a problem with the word 'off'. He has a habit of jumping on the dining room table and other tables that are in the living room,we do not want him to do this. When we say the word off, he starts barking and gets abit snappy and continues standing where he shouldnt be. If we pick him up and put him on the floor he barks at us and looks like he wants to have a little go at us.

is there anything i could do to stop him from reacting like this and to come down without any fuss?

Picking up is very unnatural to many animals so that may be why he snapped, I would grab him via the collar and remove him off the table and use the command word "off". You'll have to do it a few times before he understands,
If he is barking and snapping so you can not grab his collar, perhaps keep a lead on him while he is indoor so you can easily and safely grab the lead and lead him off the table.
Watch him closely when he around the table certain things like readying his legs/raising his head to get a view of distance to judge jumping up on the table and correct this.

Thanks for the reply,we havent really tried to grab him by the collar, could he be barking at us because he doesnt know what were askin him to do,or is it just because he doesnt want to come down?..Picking him up is the last resort and he doesnt mind being picked up normally so i dont think it could be that. when we do get him off finally he starts to snap, is that just him being stubborn and trying to be dominant?

He doesn't know what your asking of him becasue it has not been taught.
he may not mind being picked up when all is calm but he does when he up on the table because he is being difiant and dominant, remove him via the collar or lead and once on the floor as you say he reacts badly, simply remove him from the room and whether you put him out back or just in the kitchen and shut the door and move from sight, if only for a few minutes he will soon learn it is not the right way to get your attention or a good way to behave, once he has calmed down, invite him back in and over to you pet calmy and talk softly prasing him. Sooner rather than later if done correctly he will get the message.

could you put some alfoil on the tables ..most dogs do not like the feel of it under their feet ( paws ) and he might just jump straight back off the tables.
