What's your routine for bedtime? Start from a couple of hours before.

Same with the car journeys. Also, how did you start her off in the car?

OK. The play's ok, but try to stop about half an hour before bedtime, and don't feed within 3 hours of her going to bed. That way her adrenaline levels will be lowered although she'll still be tired & her gut will have had time to stop working overtime on her food! I also wouldn't give her milk at any time as dogs can't digest it, and it'll make her restless. Try putting 2 drops of lavender oil on a corner of her blanket to aid restful sleep.

When you say you go out of sight, do you mean in the front seats? Is she in a crate in the boot space? If so, try putting the back seats down so she can still see you, and so feels a bit more secure. Also, don't fuss her at all when you put her in the car, act as though nothing's different and that it's something totally normal that happens all the time. By making a fuss you're actually alerting her to the journey & seperation from you.

Try covering the crate with a blanket so she feels snug & secure & try to keep talking so that she knows you're there.

It might also help if sometimes you put her in the car for 2 minutes without going anywhere, and then just let her out again. Just sit in the driver's seat for a minute or two & then treat her & take her back indoors.

I used to have a JR that from the day we picked him up hated travelling in the car. He would scream, get sick and sometimes poop it upset him so much. To get him used to it, I would let him sit in the car with a chew while working on the engine or washing it without going anywhere. This helped a lot, but it wasn't until he was older and realised that a trip in the car meant going somewhere cool or the woods, did he really settle. As for the crate, they need to realise that no matter how much they whine they will not be let out. Once this happens, they should settle down sooner. However, 8 weeks is just a baby. At this age any separation will be difficult for her, and you should not expect too much. You may find that she wakes several times during the night, realises that she's alone and cry out. Where you place the crate can also affect how she adapts to it. If you keep it in your bedroom at night she might be happier knowing you are close when she wakes. Good luck.
