whinging and mouthing
I've recently got a 7 month old female Staffordshire bull terrier, When she gets bored she constantly whinges and is almost always biting/ mouthing objects like clothes, bed sheets and nips sometimes when playing. Lexi also jumps over furniture, we are trying to stop this but she doesn't do as she's told most of the time and thinks everything's a game. She is the first puppy I've ever had so I'm unsure how to deal with any of this. Does anyone have any tips? I'd be grateful for any tips and support! We have booked her in for training classes but its not for a couple of weeks.

Hi & welcome. Please come and introduce yourself here...

What have you done so far to stop the various behaviours?
What do you feed her on? Type & brand.
What sort of exercise does she get? How long for & on/off lead?
Sorry for all the questions!

Re: whinging and mouthing
I tell her no, give Lexi her toys when shes biting something to try stop her and try to get her to go round the furniture. I award her when shes being good and try and correct her when shes naughty.
We feed her on dry food, the brand is wagg.
She gets two 20-30 minute walks a day at the moment as when we first got her she wasnt used to going on walks. She plays with my 12 year old staffy and with her toys.
Thanks

Re: whinging and mouthing
At 7 months Lexi should be getting 2/3 35 minute walks with some off lead/long lead play a day so perhaps that's why she got extra energy, perhaps up it, the general rule of thumb Is 5 mins per month of age, But I think her diet will have a lot to do with it wagg is a really awful food full of additives. I'd get her of this as soon as possible. Here is a list of dry food recommendations http://staffy-bull-terrier.com/dry_food also James well beloved and wainwrights are both good mid priced foods.

Re: whinging and mouthing
Hi, I have had her about 2 weeks and when I first got her she wasn't used to going on walks which was obvious when her claws were long and smooth. She used to stop before we even got to the bottom of the road but she is ok now, but pulls to go back home after a small walk. I will try and walk her more and I will invest in some new food for her thank you Any tips on the whinging or not listening?

Re: whinging and mouthing
Consistency, perseverance & patience! Sorry, that's not all that helpful, is it?Zoee wrote:Any tips on the whinging or not listening?
The whining is because she's still very unsettled and unsure of herself. That'll settle down as she gets used to her new home, new rules & new family.
The not listening is quite natural, because she doesn't know any better. It sounds as though she had very little training before she came to you, so you will start to notice a difference once she realises what she can and can't do.
Changing food will help enormously because her Excess energy levels will drop a bit - with the Wagg food, think 5 year old child on speed - and she will become more responsive. The more training you do with her, the more she will listen, if that makes sense, so do several small training sessions per day of no more than 5 or so minutes each. Start with simple things like sit and down, then try leave & stay. Maybe "off" when you want her off the furniture.
If she's food orientated then use treats to entice & reward her.

Great advise above, when you change her food do it gradually over 1-2 weeks so she doesn't get an upset tummy

Re: whinging and mouthing
Great advice above, really does require patience of a saint at times, if she's getting too hyper or you feel really stressed out by it all ( just need 5 min to think in peace, I know I have) a short time out in a small safe room with nothing she can easily destroy or hurt herself on is a good technique for letting her calm herself down.

Re: whinging and mouthing
Burns is ok, but as she is so hyper I'd be more inclined to go for a hypoallergenic food such as James Wellbeloved or a fish based food like fish4dogs. Eden is also good, as is Millies Wolfgeart.

Re: whinging and mouthing
I can vouch for Caryll's recommendation of Eden. I've reared Bacchus on it and it is very economical as, being good quality, the volume required per meal is low. It is not only hypoallergenic but also holistic.
I am in the process of changing to BARF but not because of any issues with Eden.

Re: whinging and mouthing
Thank you for all your advice she has her hyper moments but they are only really after she wakes up, she does sleep a few times even before she goes bed and is quite tired after walks, but she is on heat atm so that could be it.
