Re: Staffie publicity!
I ave NEVER believed that a dog is dangerous. It is the owner that is dangerous!
I believe with good care, discipline, training and love, any dog can be the perfect family pet. It's just a shame that Staffs are branded as dangerous.
Good work though

Re: Staffie publicity!
Watch this space! When we set up this new charity we wanted it to be so much more than just rehoming. We hope to have a downloadable letter to send to MSP's highlighting the problems faced by staffies and to start an education campaign.
Thanks for all your kind comments - it really is a victory for staffies and hopefully the start of change.
Ian Robb at Help for Abandoned Animals Arbroath has worked really really hard to get this petition heard - we are so pleased to have been able to support him.

It's same thing at this end of the planet unfortunately. The past couple months there were couple online articles regarding people being attacked by a dogs. No mention of the breed but have a guess which breed of a dog was used for the picture in these articles

Re: Staffie publicity!
The next step for us is arranging an all rescues meeting. We've invited rescues across Scotland to come along to a meeting in Glasgow on 15th November at 10.30 to try to come up with some solutions to put forward to the Government and the petitions committee.

Re: Staffie publicity!
Brilliant ! You are just great !
Im doing my best here to get people to know and love and trust staffies, I bring Tia to work (vet hospital) and stand in the waiting room with her, she is very affectionate but calm and great with kids and people love her.
Pete the vet (TV 3 vet), took her and Bella my RR on TV to talk about "dangerous" dogs and how when owned by the right people they are fantastic family pets!
Everybody on the set LOVED them!!!

Re: Staffie publicity!
We have a meeting planned for 15th November in Glasgow and have invited as many rescues as we could think of and dog wardens.
We've had a brilliant response and lots of people are going to attend.
The idea is to try to come up with a solution to the overbreeding and abandonment of staffies (and other breeds as it will just get passed to another "fashionable" breed) and send a letter to the petitions committee.

Re: Staffie publicity!
I had a lady say "oh no" when I told her my dog was a Staffordshire bull terrier, so I took the time to explain to her about the breed.
While her daughter was playing with Nemo I told her how its predominately a family dog and that its not an Amstaff, which are illegal here.
I do this about 10 times a day.
Problem is staffies aren't really that common here but most people know about amstaffs and pitbulls so they mediately think thats what my dog is.
Oh well one person at the time educated.

Re: Staffie publicity!
Just wanted to say thankyou to Marty publicly! We are really grateful for all the collars, leads, harness etc - they will be so useful for us as virtually every dog that comes through the rescue doesnt have a decent collar etc.

Re: Staffie publicity!
We got feedback about the Petitions Committee follow up meeting from Ian Robb - they agreed to do the following:
" Public Petitions Committee agreed to continue the petition with members John Wilson and Mark MacDona"ld speaking very positively about the petition.
PPC to write to Scottish Government seeking its views on suggestion by the National Dog Warden Association Scotland regarding introducing a scheme to provide free or reduced cost neutering/spaying of dogs.
PPC also writing to Scottish Government asking how, in relation to the other six points made by the petitioner in the conclusion of his response, it might take forward or facilitate/support others in taking these points forward.
The PPC expressed an interest also in monitoring the work Angus Council is taking forward and hearing how a pilot scheme in Clackmananshire worked."
We had a great turn out for our meeting with rescues/dog wardens etc. It has been typed up and we are just waiting for the attendees to approve the minutes - hopefully by Tuesday and we will be submitting it to the petitions committee.

Re: Staffie publicity!
i'm not sure that will help the problem becasue the people who are breeding staffty after staffy are not going care about free or reduced neutering/spaying.
you need to fix society before trying to fix the dog problem.

Fantastic, nice work. Everything helps and placing it in the public eye has to help surely. Good luck Xx

Re: Staffie publicity!
When my local council began neutering any dogs it re homed from the pound it saw a huge decrease in dogs coming in and dogs being destroyed. At the start it was destroying about 42% of all dogs , about 966 out of 2314.After ten years of neutering it was down to 69 of 900.Last i heard it was 13 out off 380.Surely it can only help? My two arrived after some numpty decided they might as well have pups and keep one, the litter was eight pups. Then the bitch accidentally got pregnant again and had another four!! i'm sure if cheap neutering was offered then at least the last four wouldn't have appeared.

Re: Staffie publicity!
IMO it's not going to work, you have to fix society first before you fix everything else,
people just dont care anymore that why every country as a dog problem.

Re: Staffie publicity!
if you fix society you will fix most problem we have today, people dont care these days about their actions so cheaper or free neutering or spading is not really going fix the problem.
the only way of fixing our society getting out or changing the human right act & get tougher on mum and dads.

Re: Staffie publicity!
We would have liked the Petitions Committee to move a bit faster and a bit further but the biggest achievement is that they have not dismissed it!
We are campaigning for a lot more and will post up the response on here.
I know its people not the dogs - the response from the Scottish Government animnal welfare department was shocking, absolutely no idea!
We need councils looking at their tenancy agreements to stop indiscriminate breeding - perhaps only allow dogs if they are spayed/neutered (unless registered for breeding) etc. etc. We need a uniform price for neutering - not £150 from one vet and £300 from another etc etc.
Once our collective response has been agreed I will post it here so you can all see it.
The dog wardens in Clackmanashire offered free neuter/spay and chip which was widely used - it might not target those we would wish but its a step in the right direction. It would be great to see a scheme like that all over Scotland.

I've tried to attach the agreed submission to the Petitions Committee following our multi agency meeting on 15th November but failed!
We had a really good attendance and everyone agreed with the submission. If anyone would like a copy please email us at saveastaffie@yahoo.co.uk and we will email you a copy.

Re: Staffie publicity!
I really think the free neutering or spading is an pretty bad idea you are encourage people who cant afford dogs to go out and get one also the tax payers to pay for the vets the bills which after abit make people shouting to have these dogs banned when these ideas doen't help.
Re: Staffie publicity!
I dont see how free neutering or spaying will encourage people who cant afford dogs to get one. People who are irresponsible will get one anyway and always want entire dogs so they can make money off them by breeding. You only need to look at gumtree! The more dogs that are neutered/spayed, the less dogs there are for these people to pick up and breed from them.
The more dogs that are spayed/neutered the less unwanted litters there will be. It wont solve the problem on its own but it will certainly help.
It wont be taxpayers footing the bill - its rescues and rehoming centres that pay for it.

Re: Staffie publicity!
I think you all should campaigning for the change of society thats is the only way of fixing the problem. because i think you could bring plenty of thing out but the bad owners just dont care.
