Not at all happy with our vet
Muggle had to go to the emergency vets when I was at work a few days ago as when my other half was walking her she took a tumble and laid on the floor whining and rubbing her ear against the floor. They tried to examine her ears and eyes and as usual she put up a massive fight (she's not good with eyes and ears at the vets.) They told us to take her to our local vets the following day and they would give her a full examination and bloods under sedation as they were worried her blood might not be clotting properly. So we dropped her in the next morning and I went to pick her up at four o'clock the next afternoon. I was informed that she'd put up a fight when they were administering the sedative and that she'd taken a knock to the nose and had a bit of a nose bleed. Imagine my surprise when I got home to discover that her nose was still bleeding (and continued to do so for the next 24 hours) and that she had such a bad black eye that the entire eyeball was the colour of a dark red wine and the inner lid so swollen it was covering about 25% of her eye. I made another appointment for her to be seen again the next day as I was concerned that her eye was damaged and the vet tried to tell me that it was probably a stress reaction although when I argued this he agreed that she must have taken a nasty knock as there is a clear hemorrhage. I have not made a complaint but let the practice manager know my displeasure that this could have happened at their practice and that they did not tell me that she had been injured. I am furious. I know she reacts badly at the vet (the only time she is ever remotely aggressive) but they should not have let her get injured like that. Either she did it to herself when she was thrashing around in which case they should have been holding her down properly or she has taken a pop at someone and they have replied in kind. Im worried about these experiences at the vets as this amount of distress could have some really nasty implications for a dogs future temperament. Her bloods came back fine by the way, so that at least is good news.

awww poor muggle! .. what a horrible thing to happen! .. a vet is meant to be someone you can trust with your animal! jeeze :\ .. and surely if she was been a bit much due to been in a place she dont like they should use a muzzle and members of staff with good restraint!.

Yeah, the whole thigs been horrible. Her eye looks like she's been in a carcrash and she's looking really sad. I feel terribly guilty every time I see her eye.

Re: Not at all happy with our vet
Certainly find another vet, and also put into writting about the treament you've just experienced (me and letters!) but if it helps others and also brings attention to it, then good.
Pleased to hear the bloods came back fine Xx

Go to a new vet and write a review of the vet on google or something.

oh no, poor Muggle... I hope she will get better soon.
don't know what to think about the vets... it would be good to know what REALLY happened...

Poor Muggle
Glad the blood tests came back clear, but what an ordeal to go through for the poor dear. Now you've got me worried as my girl does'nt do well with people trying to examine eyes, ears etc.... either. I always mention this when taking my girl to the vet so they are fully aware and would like to think if I was'nt present that they would be mindful of the fact and take steps to make it as pleasant as possible for all involved ( my girl and the vets / nurses ) which should've been the case for your Muggle too.
Hope the eye heals well and there is no permanent damage. Keep us posted

Poor little girl, hope her eye starts settling soon.
I don't like the fact that nobody seems to be able to give you a straight answer. When you have entrusted the care of your dog with a qualified health professional you do not expect to find your dog injured when you return to pick her up. I would find it difficult to trust this vet practice again and even if you do or don't take it further, I would still look for another vet.

Re: Not at all happy with our vet
i would put in a letter of complaint with pictures etc. and then find another vet. i love our vets. when lemmy had to go for tests i explained to the vet that he had never been left and that i didnt want him to have a bad experience or sit and cry in a cage feeling abandoned untill it was his turn for theatre so the vet had me hold him while he administered a preop jab which made him dopey and sleey till the full anaesthetic was given., the vet should do as you ask. lay down your concerns when you register with a new vet and remind them every time something needs to be done. so many people go into the vetinery proffession for the money not for the welfare of the animal so its a shmae when you get the odd uncaring one because our pets suffer for it and it puts them off for life. hope muggle gets better soon and isnt too traumatised and hope your next experience with a vet is better.

Re: Not at all happy with our vet
I would be fuming! I am anyway I want to go round there and give the vet a black eye and its not even my dog! I have worked in a vets before and there is absolutely no need for this sort of thing, we are taught to restrain the animals effectively, she shouldnt have the chance to trash around so much her nose bleeds. Im sorry I would refuse to pay and I would go to another vets.

Re: Not at all happy with our vet
That is terrible..poor Muggle. If she wasn't afraid and scared of vets she sure would be now....They are professionals and should know what they are doing.. sounds pretty woeful to me
. Yes I would definitely find another vets quick smart. Complain and take photos as well for future reference.
We travel about 50 kms to get to our vets because they are absolutely wonderful. There are closer vets to us, but you need to feel comfortable with your vet, safe in the knowledge they will do the right thing by you and your beloved pet.

Re: Not at all happy with our vet
I really feel sorry for you and your poor dog and would certainly find yourself a new Vet. I have stayed with my previous dogs when they have had X-Rays or whilst they had a premed so that they were asleep before I left them. Vets should listen to you, they are not doing you a favour, you are paying them for their service just like any other!
I would take some photos of your dogs injuries and refuse to settle the bill. After all if you let this go you are letting them get away with it and it could happen again to some other poor dog - Just not on.
Hope your girlie recovers from her experience very soon.

Re: Not at all happy with our vet
Sorry to do this but I thought I'd post some pictures of whats happened to the poor old girls eye. It actually looks much worse in real life and she is understandably nervous of me waving a camera around in front of her face at the moment so I dont want to push my luck. These photos will be included in the letter of complaint. I think it's no coincidence that she urinated in the house today, she was never the easiest dog to house train but at 14 months todays accident was obviously out of the ordinary. Thanks for the kind words of support guys, we appreciate it.
Also, that great big nose makes her look like a lurcher in these pictures!

Re: Not at all happy with our vet
Oh poor baby. Thats just disgracefull, so not right. Thats enough to damage even the boldest dogs temperement.
Find a new vet and maybe just take her up there for a visit from time to time, so she gets used to it again and begins to trust them. Xx

Re: Not at all happy with our vet
this is terrible I feel so bad for poor Muggle, I hope this doesn't affect her temperment, I would be completely outraged if something like that ever happened at a vet that I used. I'm glad you have decided to write a complaint!
hope Muggle is back to her old self soon

Re: Not at all happy with our vet
Sorry I missed this. Suki tends to be a bit overaggressive at the vets as well espically if she has to have blood drawn. I make it a point to let the vet know and I always go in to hold her through any procedure .I agree that you should definately complain and look for a new vet.
I would also recommend taking her to the vet after exercising and if you can arrange it take her for a walk around the vet clinic every so often to get her used to the area. It may also be helpfull to have her meet the vet a few times when she isn't ill and have him give her a treat. This way she won't make a negative mental association with either the vet or a clinic.

Re: Not at all happy with our vet
She had mange when she was young so she's had fairly regular visits to the vets throughout her life and has no problem at all going there. She'll also let the vets examine her but as soon as eye drops or any other medical equipment comes out she becomes very agressive. The weird thing is she used to be fine with it and then all of a sudden one day decided she wasn't happy to go along with it anymore so I suspect something has happened before.

Re: Not at all happy with our vet
Dont use that vets again , Also refuse to pay them, If you havent payed them already , If they say they will take you to court, Write to your local newspaper , And try and get them to publish your story about the mistreatment of your vets , That scare them and put them out of business In no time , Or cost them alot of business , And cost there reputation , .

Re: Not at all happy with our vet
Staffies really are hardy aren't they?! Amazingly Muggles eye has more or less returned to normal. If I had the same injury it would have taken weeks, probably months to heal. She is an amazing girl.
