First puppy
Hi
I just though I should join to get some advice about my new puppy Frank,
I finally get to pick Frank up on the 23rd of this month, and to say I’m excited is a MASSIVE understatement.
Although my parents have had dogs as I was grown up this is MY first dog and it’s the first Staffy we have had.
My main concern is with food for him, my mum wants to keep him on dried foods such as Bakers? Is this the best diet for him? Although there will be treats for him in the house or out with us.
We have had the kitchen re arranged so that when we go out he has is own little area with a bed and his water bowl and things there for him but as there is a child gate on the kitchen door, I think it is best as then he still has the whole kitchen to play in but he wont be able to slip out the cat flap while he is still small enough to fit.
A lot of my family and friends have been a little shocked when they have found out I’m getting a “staffy” I’m really hoping Frank and I can change a few peoples minds from the typical stereotype. I really want to raise him right, I’ve already fallen completely in love with him, so has my mum, which is one person changed!
But any advise for helping train him will be greatly appreciated.
Ill get a little photo of my boy up once I’m home tonight

Re: First puppy
Avoid Bakers complete dry food and all other big name brands that have TV adverts basicly. They are full of colours and additives aswell as just generally poor quality ingredients.
I personally use Fish4Dogs for our animals and swear by it, both our dogs and both cats get food from them aswell as all their treats come from them too.
Orijen is another really good dry food.
But here is a list of good dry foods.

Hi from me and Harvey!
I agree with above i would avoid such foods as bakers, pedigree etc as they are just full of rubbish, if you are wanting to feed kibble then look at the link steve posted

Re: First puppy
Thanks
I’m really excited to get him!! I try to get up to see him as much as possible at the moment, however with work its a little difficult. The couple I am getting him from, have Franks mum and dad as pets so I’ve seen them both so I have an idea in my head of how Frank will look grown up both parents are gorgeous dogs with great natures, just adding to my excitement. Alfie (Franks Dad) is the cutest thing, he sat for ages on his bum with his paws and head on my knees getting petted!!!
The name Frank has pretty much come from my love for Shameless, I think Frank Gallagher is brilliantly hilarious!! The first time I seen my Frank he was sliding all over the laminated flooring trying to jump, and the name just fitted
I was looking at all the additives in Bakers when I was up buying his bed and harness and was a little worried at it, I don’t want to feed him junk.
I’m glad I have the support of my family around me as this is the biggest responsibility I’ve ever had, but I’m more than ready for this.
However as he is my first dog my dad is going to help me train him, especially when it comes to toilet training lol.
He has been around kids since he was born as the couple he is with just now have two young children, and although there are no kids in my house I have plenty of family with little kids so I’m glad he’s going to be used to kids.
I have read that staffys learn things very quickly so I’m hoping Frank does to.
Already have him registered with his Vet, and his first appointment is booked for his needles, however I am also going to be getting him chipped for my own piece of mind.
I’m a bit of a photoholic, I got a camera a couple of months ago and love taken photos so expect plenty of Frank grown up

Re: First puppy
Loads of good training videos on Youtube, this aint the best one but first I found.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtD2GRbbyzU
Training takes repitition short regular bursts, pups have short attention span so short periods are best but very regular.
Staffs are very clever though very stubbon at times and yeah our pup is only 7 weeks old had him for a week and already doing well with sit, down and stay, also doing very well at toilet training. Leave is something we need to work on next.
Molly was the same, she was doing sit and down in the first couple of days of having her to a very good standard.
Now she does: sit, down, stay, leave, back, spin, circle, shake, hi5, over, dead, sit pretty.

Re: First puppy
I can deal with stubborn, I’ve lived with my father for 22 years lol.
I’m so going to teach Frank to Hi 5 me!! I’m looking forward to coming home from work and being greeted by my boy, waiting at the top of the stairs!!!
He wont ever be left on his own for long as my dad is self employed so he will be nipping home to check on him, and my mum works shifts so hopefully he will be around someone most of the time.
I need to find out what the rules are for the dogs on my local beach for next summer when he’s a bit bigger
I have a lot to learn but hopefully its going to be fun

Re: First puppy
Welcome to the forum Charlene Im sure you will find alot of good Information and suport on this site, Just like I have In my short term of being a memeber on this site, Key to all the training with you puppy Is patience ( ALOT of It lol) And other skills you will need to train your puppy well, Are also a willing to learn, Also I would recommend enroling your puppy Into puppy training classes for begginers, This will socialise your dog around alot of people, And around other dogs, Cause we all know staffys have thing not liking other dogs, Unless socialised around other dogs alot, Good Luck .

Re: First puppy
Hi, i am new here too, Summer is now 7 weeks and 2 days, everyone on here has been a great help, wouldve been a sleep deprived nervous wreck by now. My 11 year old has trained Summer to high 5 already, altrhough i'm not sure if its just a fluke, but Summer and my son seem to like the praise so am not going to shatter eithers confidence lol
I was terrible when i was waiting for her, did everyones head in with puppy talk, counting the days is awful, they drag so much.
Roll on 23rd for you.
