Re: Who shows ?
hi holly hows you, just a quick question for you as i know you show you're dog AL, The breed standard for staffs weight and height is between 14 to 16 inches in height, and the weight is between 28 to 38lbs, but can you tell me how the judges determine how the breed conforms to the height and weight standard,
Guest- Guest
Re: Who shows ?
Shane, they do it by sight & experience! I used to show Bandit & he was a little over the height standard. A couple of judges mentioned him as 'top sized' or 'slightly over-sized' but then went on to say that his good points outweighed that. If a dog's slightly over the standard it's a minor fault & like all faults it should be treated in proportion to it's degree.

Re: Who shows ?
Yes its just by sight they determine it.The only thing they really check up close is the teeth, ears, coat and tail

Re: Who shows ?
The judge checks the overall confirmation and balance if the dog is built right its movement will be free and will maintain a good topline on the move they no from experience the height and weight they check every bit of the dog and it comes with experience

Re: Who shows ?
Yes the dog has to walk up and down the mat twice so the judge can see whether the dogs back legs are pushing and front legs pulling

i was given the wrong information, a fella told me that the weight and measure the dogs before they enter a comp and if they are not within the standard they are disqualified, just goes to show you don't believe everything you hear

Re: Who shows ?
i have been to a few dog shows just to have a look and have a chat with some people who are showing dogs. i had my eyes opened by one person who could tell me dogs who would win even if they werent the best dogs there. he told me which dog in nearly every class which would come out as best . due to who knows who judges etc. and in one certain case of a dog whos owners paid a walker to walk their dog , now the walker was well known to the judges so the dog did win this class . call me skeptical but the world of championship showing is a closed shop imho . if you are not in the clique your dog can be the best dog according to breed standard but it wont win..

blue is a standard kennel club colour, i cant see why you should be penalised for having a blue dog shown, or is it that you think some judges dont like the blues
Guest- Guest
Re: Who shows ?
a lot of judges wont even look at a blue dog , there is no way they are going to let their lines become lesser valued due to choosing a blue dog over their lines . the likes of valglo, chrashkon , sparstaff, and many other top breeders wish their lines to be the best dogs even if they are not . if you notice with lots of breeds of dogs the standard stays similar to breed but not exact to breed as trends change. staffordshire bull terriers looks have changed over the generations to suit breeders personal preferences . all you have to do is look at pics of the breed through the generations to see how the look of the dogs have changed . this is the case with most breeds .

Re: Who shows ?
if you look at the winners in the staffy bit on the crufts site there are some blue's winning , but back to your point on the shows , i've sold a bitch to a couple up in aberdeen they have a 10yr old dog and when he was younger they had a go at showing , and they basically told me everyhting that you put in your post david , so kind of backs up what your saying

Well now a days some judges go by the dog and others by face, My dog lost out on a championship ticket because the other man was well known to the judge.

Re: Who shows ?
Yea i think ur right i think that if a blues conformation is better than another dogs then they will triumph but the point is u dont see many standard nice looking blues as they are mostly bred for colour x
ha just wait iv got a blue champ in the making lol
I too am concentrating on perfecting the Blues, I intend on getting them out there into the show circuit and hopefully produce enough quality to the standard of the favoured blacks. However, there is a problem with over breeding the blues purely for the colour in the uk as they are usually considerably more expensive to buy, but many (apart from a select few that are in it to improve them) are breeding without a thought to what they are breeding, unfortunately this happens to every nice breed of dog out there including another breed recently that I have owned years ago and still love, the dogue de bordeaux although these days the quality here is so poor I wouldn't risk a lifetime of monstrous vet bills due to hereditary illness from poor/over breeding.

Re: Who shows ?
Thanks for that Gem I know how cut throat the show circuit is only too well, and I am aware that blues aren't rare and have been around for a very long time and also less favoured, but that is also because the quality of the blues usually isn't very good (either too long in the muzzle, incorrect stop and too leggy, heck I've even seen a blue stud dog that was 23" unbelieveable!). My first bitch puppy is from very good lines, short legged, stocky and large bully heads, rose ears. She was a culmination of a line breeding of Ch Vanoric Voo Doo and she is showing so much potential. I plan on mating her when she's of age (and some) to a really true to type black staffy that took me quite a while to find. The dog in question throws blues, I plan on keeping back a female pup that has potential and type from this mating, that if I am lucky enough to get a show quality female pup. I will also be possibly sourcing an outside show quality male from slightly different lines, so I am keeping tabs on other peoples breedings & show results too. If I cannot find a suitable blue dog, I will acquire a show quality black. I will definitely keep everyone updated though. & thanks again for the pep talk!

Re: Who shows ?
Oh yes he certainly is! His structure is impeccable! That's what I want to have the blue's looking like eventually, it will take some very hard work! (but I have a cunning plan though hehe) The good breeders need to work together on this though to keep this breed in top form, it will take many to undo what others have done wrong!

lol I will keep my eyes peeled, so I can have a cuddles! hehe
& Your so right, people who know what they are doing, sit, wait, watch and plan very carefully! Over breeding is wrong and there are so many staffy's and other dogs in shelters that nobody wants, it's unfair on the dogs and very irresponsible. A dog should not be bred for money or an income, it should only be bred to improve and benefit the breed!
I will keep you posted but it will be a good year plus before I have any puppies! I want to get my little lady around the circuit first and let her mature to her full potential!
Gem did you post the message V...below....V on here by accident? ROTFLMAO! (to be honest I've only just noticed it about 3 +hours later! Doh)
It will be manny years before I get another Im enjoying my 2 and my home is complete my girl is my boys soul mate it wouldnt be fair to him to get a puppy. In the future Id like to help by doing a bit of fostering for the sbt rescue and then who knows what will happen then ive got a little cunning plan of my own

I would love to do a little fostering too, but my place at the moment is only big enough for the 3 I have planned for now, I'm hoping to relocate into the country within the next 2 years though so that may become a reality!
