Re: Who shows ?
personally i think showing your dog professionally takes up a lot of time and money its a full time job. i would show katie in local dog shows around my hometown but these are just amateur events. i wouldnt be to confident to go on the professional circuit i hear its a cut throat business.

Re: Who shows ?
i don't know that now, cant see why, the blue staffy has been around for a long time and is a colour that is recognised by the kennel club. could be certain judges dont like the colour

Re: Who shows ?

Re: Who shows ?
ah their still cracking looking dogs the blues, very expensive over here in Ireland, nearly double the price as normal coloured staffys. its a shame these unscrupulous breeders are charging premium price for blues.

Re: Who shows ?
Just looked at the kc breed standard and it says about eyes 'dark preferred but may bear some relation to coat colour' so i think it must be up to the judges dicretion.
I managed to get dave for a reasonable price but i was willing to pay alot more,i have seen blues with not half as good lines as dave for nealy £1000

Re: Who shows ?
I used to show Bandit & I now show Dempsey. When I showed Bandit there weren'e any blues, so I can't answer whether there's any prejudice about the colour. Mind you, I've yet to see a top winner in blues, so maybe.......
I stopped showing Bandit because I didn't like the attitude of so many of the people who were at the shows. It was very clique-y, and you were totally ignored (or even worse, criticised behind your back) if you weren't part of this group or that group. Bullies aren't quite so bad - at speciality shows people will actually talk to you & make you welcome) but at all breed shows you still get the same old crap about people 'having to walk the gauntlet' past staffords & bullies! What's stopping them going the other way, for god's sake?
*sigh* I'm showing Dempsey till he's 2 years old (next April) but I doubt I'll continue after that.

You can do the basics, contact work and get them going between the jumps at about 8 months or so - I started with Rocco at 15 months or so...
Deano will be starting the basics when he is 6 months at my club and will start competing next year once he turns a year - i'll be competing with rocco anyway, so the practise will do deano good in the environment.

Re: Who shows ?
The thing with blues is that ( this is not a diss on anyones blue staffords its not all blues just some blues ) they are quite often bred for colour and nothing else, which is why alot of blues dont conform to the standard. Blues also have diluted pigmentation ie. light coloured nails, eyes & nose. The standard says eyes & nose should be black (or as close as poss) so this would also be clased as a fault. Saying all that though........if the blue fitted the standard physically better than the other dogs im sure most judges would over look the pigmentation issues. It really depends on the juges and the competition lol. Give it a go if u wanna, you've got nothing to lose!!

Re: Who shows ?
It really depends on how seriously you're going to take showing. If you just want a day out, meeting other staff people and socialising your dog, go for it.
If you're going to take it seriously, be prepared for knockdowns & bitchiness (excuse the pun!), especially if you win anything. As a newbie to shows you'll be the outsider & although a lot of stafford folk are pretty friendly & will offer advice etc, some are just plain mean! (I mean the show folk, of course!)

Re: Who shows ?
The first couple of shows try to enter Stafforshire Bull Terrier show - no other breeds. You'll get a better idea of what's going on & you'll get more advice. You'll be in Minor Puppy Class if they have one I should think (6-9 months old) so you'll be first in the ring. Once your turn's over, stick around & see if you can have a chat to some the seasoned campaigners! They can give you lots of hints & advice.

gem wrote: hello im new onto the forum I dont show now but used to , blue is a diluted colour of black its not really rare judges dont choose a dog on colour they choose on conformation how the dog is made up.
Hi, welcome to the forum! Why not introduce yourself properly so we can all get to know you?
As to the judging of colours, I wish what you've said were true. Unfortunately, some judges DO judge as to their own preferences, ie colour, size etc. I know of a lot of judges that wouldn't put up a blue if it was the only decent dog in the class!! Yes, it's wrong, but................

Re: Who shows ?
They are getting a lot better now, but a lot of judges still don't like them. In an ideal world the judge will put up a dog on type & soundness first & colour second, but in practise this doesn't always happen. It isn't just blues, either, whites aren't very fashionable at the moment, the main winners seem to be dark brindle or black, with a few reds.

Re: Who shows ?
At the last championship show i was at 2 blue dogs done very well in the ring. There was a pure blue and a Blue and white patch dog, both won their classes with very strong other dogs against them.

Re: Who shows ?
i take it then you dont show your dogs on the pro circuit then, your just into the amateur side of the game, the pro side takes up a lot of time and money.Hollie C wrote:I show my dogs and it doesnt take up alot of time. Re: Who shows ?
Entry fees are getting higher all the time. Open shows aren't as bad - around £5 or £6 for the first entry, but the championship shows are terrible, normally in excess of £20 for the first entry, plus car parking & petrol. Then you have to get something to eat & drink, it all mounts up. I tend to stick with the single breed shows rather than the all breed ones. At least you get a judge who knows your breed that way!

Re: Who shows ?
Yea i think ur right i think that if a blues conformation is better than another dogs then they will triumph but the point is u dont see many standard nice looking blues as they are mostly bred for colour x

Then that was a decent judge. The point I'm making is that not all judges are like that. Especially at the smaller shows where you may not get a specialist staff judge, he probably won't even know that blue is allowed, let alone put it up!

Re: Who shows ?
Well iv been to 2 championship shows this years and last years. Cant remember last years entry price but this years was about 35 pounds for one dog and parking!

Re: Who shows ?
totaly agree that 1000 is rediculise to pay for a dog just for couler i payed 3quarter that price for the fact of the temp of his mam and dad plus both parents doing well in the show ring and some good champs in his blood.

Re: Who shows ?
I think bigwazza u obviously bought well and blue wasnt just the criteria u were looking for in a dog. Memphis has been well bred and not just bred for his colour. So many people unfortunatley are just fixated on wanting a blue stafford and couldnt care less about anything else!

very true when i started looking it was for a red or a tri not a blue and i was preperad to pay the same price as i did
but when his litter came along i was just so impressed with his mam and dad and there peds i knew he was the one for me

Re: Who shows ?
if you intend to show your dog heres a few faults you should be aware of light eyes or pink rims are to be faulted, except in a dog whose coat surrounding the eye is white, in that case the the eye rims maybe pink. tail too long or badly curled. non conformation of height and weight. full drop or prick ears. under shot over shot mouths is a serious fault. their nose should be black, a Dudley nose which is entirely pink brown or flesh coloured, appears in some fawns, reds and liver coloured brindle's, is a permanent fault, but should not be confused with the butterfly nose, commonly found on piebald dogs or those with considerable white markings around the muzzle area. should this be seen in pups there is a fair chance that the nostrils will finish all black before its fully grown. however, if it is seen on an adult, it is contrary to the black nose rule and is therefore considered a serious a fault

Re: Who shows ?
Hmm thats very good information there thank you! knew about some of that from experience in the meetings! Went to the n.i.s.b.t open show today and came away with a reserve best dog, which was very good as he beat an irish champion, although the dog was named the best winning dog in the UK at the moment!
