I think Darcy was about 3/4months when she started playing tug, fetch was about 5/6 months.

I have had two Staffies that loved playing fetch. One with sticks (not good but would not chase anything elae) and one with a ball. I also had another Staffie that would never fetch anything. If he made the effort to get the ball he then expected me to chase him around the Park to get it back.
I now have a nine week old puppy who already loves tug games.
No help but shows that they are all different.

try attaching something to a bit of string ..
'n see if he will chase it as you pull the string
then throw it ..
or try throwing a ball .. after he's played with it a bit ..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
'lady' loves chasing a frizbee ..
( somewhere down the line she figured she's have to bring it back
( in order for it to fly again
she'll ignore the frizbee if she finds a stick
and ignore all else if she spots a blackbird to chase ..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
when she first came home with me
first game was .. chase the monster-hand-on-top-of-or-under-the-duvet ..
i.e. i did the yellow pages 'walking fingers' thing to entice her to 'chase'

Unfortunately, my reflexes are not what they were apparently. I have the small scabs on the back of my "Monster Spider" hand lol.

LOL, the looking at you like an idiot reminds me of the looks that our rotties and most of our dogos used to give us. It was like, you threw the bloody thing - go fetch it yourself Honestly, I think it just depends on the dog - only our last dogo and our first staffy have actually played fetch with us the rest just didn't want to have anything to do with it and god knows we tried everything to get them to play.

Re: when will my little man start to play fetch?
I think all dogs are diff., there's no real pattern as you can see above. Koda is 4 months and has loved playing tug since he was 2 months, he will chase a ball and bring it straight back ... but I have only done this at home, nowhere near ready to let him off the lead as yet ! lol Hang in there as I reckon eventually you will find a game that really gets Caspers interest & interaction

Re: when will my little man start to play fetch?
I would work on his recall in the house then when he has that nailed tease him with a tennis ball to get him to want it. Then roll the ball away a couple of feet and if he picks it up recall him. Fetch is a fantastic way of exercising him and saves a lot of shoe leather and great for tiring him. On our lunchtime walk I play fetch and flirt pole with Bacchus for an hour and still can't tire the bugger out but it is definitely building his muscles and stamina.

Re: when will my little man start to play fetch?
Snoop never played tug and his idea of fetch was nicking the kids ball and them chasing him TBH Snoop was never really into toys but was a bugger for chewing anything plastic ds, remotes, phones those sort of things
Lula played tug with us from being 8 weeks old and loves it she has a number of rope type toys. I do play fetch with her and she will bring it back and has done for awhile now. I`ve not tried her outside with fetch but its only been the last two days she has been allowed out.

Re: when will my little man start to play fetch?
Sasha loves playing tug with anyone that will, I cant play tug with her anymore shes too strong. As for fetch she will do anything for a ball always has done, she even gets the ball and drops it on our laps in doors now and then gives us her paw, if we dont acknowledge her she then gives a little bark as if to say 'dont ignore me'. Fetch really does help to keep her in tip top condition xx

Re: when will my little man start to play fetch?
Just another little piece of advice. When he does pick up the ball never try to catch him if he tries to run off with it as he will see this as a game and you'll never catch him.

Exactly what I done with Zeus, now he doesn't get the idea of fetch, he gets the ball and runs off with it lol. So I end up playing a game of chase with him. Still.. it gets him tired, that's the main thing.. and it tires me out too!
