Whistle training
I have decided to start whistle training Jemma, as her recall is very poor when there are any distractions whtsoever!!
She has no puppy classes for 3 weeks, so hopefully i can train her in this time, or am i being too optimistic?
Anyone else done recall training this way?
Its done in 4 stages, over 4 days:
Day 1:
Condition the dog to the whistle-
use high value treats (cheese, ham, sausage or chicken.)
with dog close to u, blow whistle and give treat.
Do this 10 times.
Repeat 2 or 3 times in the day.
Day 2:
Repeat day 1 once.
later in the day stand near your dog and b quiet.
wen dog looks away, blow whistle, if they look, give treat.
if not, repeat day 1 for another day.
Day 3:
Blow whistle whn dogs breakfast is out down.
blow whistle thoughout the day and treat.
blow whistle wen dinner is put down.
Day 4:
take dog out to park using a flexi lead.
let dog wonder away from u, blow the whistle, if dog comes back ,praise and treat.
if dog does not come, blow whistle again, then pull the flexi lead, then treat.
repeat later in day, then for the next few days.
when dog has mastered this, let them off lead and try.
Eventually, u can replace the whistle with a verbal command.
hopefully this will wrk with Jemmas distractions.
Any opinions?

Re: Whistle training
My lot are trained to the whistles, calling all names out when i need them at my side asap is manic also i sometimes find not all dogs are good with their names. what you wrote sounds like a good tactic.

Re: Whistle training
Definately a good idea to train dogs to a whistle, I would spend longer conditioning the dog to the whistle in the house though, perhaps a week or even longer, I started it with my dogs and made the mistake of progressing too fast to outside, so had to go back to square one. Also I think dogs should be recall trained to a verbal cue as well, just in case you go out one day and forget your whistle, or lose it!
Jenny to answer your question you use a special dog whistle, you can get them a any pet shop.

Re: Whistle training
Wow sounds very Interesting way of training a dog on the recall , But how about distractions ? , Do you train the dog without distractions, Then we can answers to whistle and command, Add distractions, So It does the recall with or without distractions ?!

Re: Whistle training
wht i was told to do was build up the distractions. when they are conditioned to hearing the whilstle, take thm out on the lead, and start blowing it when they are distracted, i.e, sniffin grass, or poo lol. then hopefully it will wrk wen theres other dogs about. not sure as have not got tht far with it yet lol
