Dog DNA tests Empty Dog DNA tests

Post by shakespearesdog Mon Aug 08 2011, 15:03

Has anyone given their dog a DNA test before? A lady in the park was sold a dog as a boxer x rottweiler and she wasn't sure about it and thought she might have ridgeback or staff in her. So she bought the test and it came back 50% boxer 40% rotty and 10% mastiff, so it was pretty accurate! I am curious to do one on Romeo but there pretty expensive just for something to have a bit of fun with.

Is that something you get the Vet to do, or a kit that you use yourself?????? Never really heard of it before for animals.

Interesting thinking

Haha i love Hyenas! Have you seen the crazy men in Kenya that have pet ones? I've got loads of pictures of them at home. Now that would be some guard dog- if it didn't kill you first!
You can buy them, but they tend to be quite pricey. I don't think all dog breeds are that closely related, i stand by my own theory that mastiff breeds come from an entirely different type of wolf to other dog breeds but thats just my theory! Also the asiatic breeds such as the chow are a lot more ancient then other. They seem to be quite accurate or so a lot of people have said. I don't think i'd be willing to part with 60 odd quid though just to satisfy my curiosity.

I read some test of the different ones once.. can't remember where, though. I believe some were fairly accurate, but some also sent in blood of pure breeds and got them back as crosses if I remember correctly.

They are not accurate at all. Most can't even identify pure bred dogs. A lot of them don't have Staffs, AmStaffs or APBTs on them so they can't ID those dogs any way!! I'd say that as it stands now they are a waste of money. Though the results can be funny. So if you have some extra money to waste you can try it, but don't take the results seriously!

its an easy fix , save the hassle if you want to know what breed your dog is buy a pure breed registered dog , problem solved .

Well thats not true at all these days there are just as many fake registered dogs as their are actual registered dogs,
that peice of a paper with a stamp and a list of dogs is so easily tampered with these days.
So unless one can read minds its not as easy as just buy a pure breed because you never know.

It was a joke!

Anyway, if you go to a decent, honest breeder, you'll get a pedigree you can rely on.

All dogs had to come from somewhere, even pedigrees are a combination of other breeds from generations back so they could enver be that accurate.

A friend of mine had it done as a extra thing to show police if her dog was 2 be seized, shes obsessed with BSL lol her dog would never be seized its a kc reg staff and so standard its untrue. Her dog was bought from a extremley reputable breeder and is no doubt a pure staff and test came back with no staff at all lmao!! It was something ridiculous like 40% springer 40% border terrier and 20% greyhound. So so funny i couldnt stop laughing at her, she took it all so seriously and contacted the breeder. x

DNA tests are only good if they are used to test for specific things (ie hereditary illnesses)- just trying to figure out what breeds have gone into a certain dog would be so inaccurate as to be worthless!
