Chewing when left alone.
Can anyone help? We have a 16 month old female staff who chews the stairs when we are out. We give her lots of toys to distract her but she still chews. We have tried putting her in a crate but she worked out how to open it, when we stopped her from being able to get out she chewed the bars and has damaged her teeth. Does anyone have any advice on how to stop her chewing when she is left, as she never does this when someone is with her.

Re: Chewing when left alone.
how long is she left alone for?
when i go out of long period of time i take my dogs out for a really long walk, in my experience a tired dog is a good dog.

She is left for about 4 hours while we are at work. She is normally ok in this time but if left any longer, e.g we have to work late, then she chews.

Re: Chewing when left alone.
How much excercise do you give her before she's left?
Have you thought about putting up a baby gate? Yes, I know she could jump it, but she may not.

I have never tried crates, I have a babygate on the bathroom door and any other door I don't want her in!! and the bathroom is tiled so she can't chew (but she never has, just won't risk it). Its never as long as 4 hours though and if she chewed the crate she may well do the bars but its an idea? There are sprays you can use though

Re: Chewing when left alone.
We have tried a baby gate and a dog guard but she jumps both and when shut in the kitchen she chewed the trunking around some wires, she didn't hurt herself as only chewed the trunking but didn't want to risk it again so gave her the run of stairs and landing.
We normally take her for a walk when we get home from work but will try taking her for a walk in the morning before she is left. Thanks

Re: Chewing when left alone.
what i would do is take her out for around a hour with a ball or a ring and give her a good run before you leave her, give her plenty toys not next to each other all over where you leave her. see how that goes
Re: Chewing when left alone.
Will try these ideas. Thanks everyone

Re: Chewing when left alone.
I would definately take her for a good run before leaving her! If she's tired she is more likely to settle down and chill out while she's left.

Yea take her in the morning for a walk and really nacker her out! The spray might be idea to try...probably wont do much good but for a couple of quid its worth a go! Has she got a kong? If not get one and stuff it with food, that will keep her entertained for and least an hour!

Thanks. She has 3 kongs which she loves playing with when we are home but not sure how long they entertain her for when we are old because sometimes when we get in they still have food in if she hasn't been able to get out easily. Will try the spray too.
