left, right or ambidextrous
left or right?
i have read that like people, dogs have a dominate paw that they use for such tasks that require it.
I watched Romeo all day and even gave him a few little puzzles that required his front paws to solve and the result is... * drum roll please*
Romeo is a Leftie!
what about your dogs?

Re: left or right?
Just quickly judging by his give paw action and his wobble Kong its always the left.
Tilly on the other hand is ambidextrous , whichever one will get her what she wants

Re: left or right?
he Mrs has just pointed out to me that it may be just because when I say paw I put my right hand out so maybe thats the reason he offers his left first

Re: left or right?
both boys are lefty as a dominant paw, but harv is quite ambidextrous
I did this else where and it seems the majority of dogs are lefties!

Or trained to be, I had this weird distant memory about being told I had to write with my right hand when I started school but didn't really think anything of it it off until a couple of years ago when my dad said that he was convinced that I had always been left handed
Ledger is a lefty although for 'paw' he matches my hand every time just realised he actually has me switch the towel to my left hand to wipe his right front paw

Re: left or right?
Loki is ambidextrous I think. He does everything with such enthusiasm he'll use any paw

Re: left or right?
i have seen romeo use his right paw many a times, but it seems that his go too paw is left. like i said, its kinda the same with people, we can use both hands, but we normally have one thats stronger and more developed i guess.
i cant judge romeos dominate with the give paw command, since he is trained to give left for right and right for left
as a child my mother told me i would write/draw with either hand, i can still do alot of things with my left hand like write, but not for every long my hand gets tired and its not as ... 'beautiful' as what my right hand can do.

Re: left or right?
tyke will use either, he will generally give you his paw to the same hand you are holding out which this is how we trained (with our realising) but when it comes to my son and tyke doing paw its gets very confusing and we are now showing ryan as tyke ends up doing a small jog

Re: left or right?
What tests are everyone using to find out. I put left then realised I think it's only because I offer my right hand when I say paw.
Might have to give his kong and see what paw he holds it with

Re: left or right?
I think Rocky is mainly a righty, it seems to be his most dominant paw anyway.

Bis uses her right paw mostly also, mainly to hit me in the face with when she's over excited about treats

Might have to give his kong and see what paw he holds it with
i put treats under a handel-less coffee mug and he needs to use his paw to knock it over. i kinda just give him things like hos kong, or a toy he wants just out of reach under the sofa
Re: left or right?
Kong is in freezer so I will double check tomorrow when he gets it after walks
