Hi all,

Recently, I got myself a beautiful blue staffy pup.
She's now 9 weeks 2 days, and I am looking to pick the best food I can afford for her.

I need the food to be dry ( mainly for convenience ), but at the same time I don't want it to be full of rubbish or to break the bank.

Having looked and looked and looked again, I have somehow settled on the "Gentle Dog Food" as it seems to score high on the allaboutdogfood website and sits within my budget.

Although it seems to get a good rating, I am really not sure what to look for regarding the nutritional values, meat content etc.

Anyone willing to offer a helping hand please? Smile

P.S
She is on Royal Canin puppy at the moment ( recommended by the breeder )

Thanks!

Hello, welcome and congratulations on your girl.

I certainly think that you have sound reasoning to your choice of kibble and the one you have chosen does score well on the site.
The only thing that bothers me a bit about the Gentle dog food is that it’s a universal all-age kibble.
Orijen and acana also have their all-ages kibble but I preferred to feed their puppy kibble at least until 10 months of age.
I always think puppies need specialized food for their growth, but it’s my personal preference.

For me the most important factor for choosing kibble is one that you can “easily” get. Nothing worse than having the ideal feed that is always out of stock or requires ridiculous delivery times.

I personally look for high meat content, in as noble form as possible (avoid the derivatives and such !) I prefer added brown rice to industrial cereals and the such.

I can recommend Orijen, Acana, Carnilove. Currently feeding Ownat (Ultra range) and Grandorf for Nifty who is chicken + egg intolerant.

Hi there,
Thank you for the reply!

I must say, the all around formula crossed my mind too.
I love the sound of Orijen, but it's just so expensive...

Would it be wise to perhaps start my puppy on the Orijen for the next 6 months and then transfer onto the Gentle Food?

Thanks

Hi & welcome.

I can't really advise on dry food (other than Baker's is absolute cr*p, and Royal Canin smelt awful to me & gave my pup explosive runs!), as my last boy was fed on Butternut Box (quite pricey, but good quality) and the boy before that was raw fed.

Orijen is considered to be one of the best on the market, but yes, it is very expensive!

Orijen is great but honestly, acana is very comparable yet cheaper Wink
If your budget allows the first year on premium puppy food before moving to the Gentle food, would be a nice solution.
My 7 month old Tigress has ownat ultra medium junior and she does look good on it.

Acana it is Smile
Ordered some online today as it seems to be a little hard to get locally ( not a huge issue though ).

Will transition slowly and see how it goes.

Thank you for being super helpful! Smile
