Hi I am new
Hi
Nice too meet you all. I’ve actually joined for a reason.
I have my baby boy Forrest who he just turned 7! He is my first born, I know it sound dramatic, but seriously he is my world. Although I know he I never going to pass (I am fully aware the day will come where I have to say good bye) I am never going to fully accept that will happen.
So, after a lot of conversations with my partner, as. Last ditch attempt, I’ve decided to mate him, in return ask for pick of the litter for a male.
I don’t know if I am allowed to ask this, so apologies if not, equally, I can’t think of any other way to approach this. It has to be the right match, and in all honesty I can’t bare the thought of one day having to say good bye to my soul mate without his legacy living on.
I hope someone can help me or at least point me in the right direction. This isn’t for money, this is purely for me to keep a piece of someone so precious to me!
TIA
SOPH X

Re: Hi I am new
Hello and welcome from my girls and me.
So I can understand your idea but I think there are several serious considerations to take on board.
Firstly, what country are you in ?
I ask because some countries will require breeding stock to be confirmed to breed standard before being accepted to reproduce KC pups. I presume your Forrest is KC registered ? There are enough bully bred dogs hoping for a home in shelters to add to the burden, taking into account BSL issues too.
Then you have to consider the female. Unless your Forrest has something above the rest (breeding line, show results), he won’t interest any reputable breeder so then you have to look for a family pet (don’t even talk about backyard breeders). That, for me, is a danger as you won’t know how “clean” she is in terms of health, temperament and the such. And then you’re essentially having to trust the female’s family to do the best for the pups until their weaning in terms of health and well-being (introduction to life).
Minimum requirements to breed would be to have both parents (so your boy) full health screened and DNA tested to ensure no risk in hereditary conditions.
Then to your proposal of mating for pup in return.
In simple figures, stud dogs here are proposed at around 400 upwards, up to 800 for top show winner. Count 4 months of female maintenance with vet support from mating to weaning. Minimal calculation is that it costs 1400 on average to produce a pup without counting unexpected costs nor the hours spent looking after mum and her pups. If I owned the female, I’d see the potential to be on a losing deal from the start (sorry).
Then what if …
Forrest catches something from female ?
Forrest can’t perform ?
There are no males in the littler ?
Only one male pup and female owner wants one too ?
Female owners change their mind ?
Pups are malformed in some way or have health issues ?
Female does not receive all care she needs to produce healthy pups ?
And the list goes on.
And you want a legacy from your Forrest, that will leave the door wide open for comparison which is neither fair for Forrest nor pup.
My personal opinion is that as much as I can understand what you want to achieve, I think the risk (especially emotional) is not worth it.
I would say to continue your adventures with Forrest and then you’ll see what the future holds.

Re: Hi I am new
I totally agree with Nifty. No new dog can 'replace' a much loved, lost dog, although a new one can go some way to filling the 'hole' that is left behind.
Please don't just breed him to a local bitch purely for the sake of having a pup - most decent breeders won't do 'pick of the litter' in lieu of stud fee now, anyway! You should only ever breed to 'better' the breed.
There are several inherited health problems with the stafford breed nowadays & they MUST be tested for in both dog and bitch & that costs money! as Nifty says, the cost of producing a puppy is approx. £1400 and the stud fee is around £400-£800. What good breeder will give away a pup worth £1400 instead of a stud fee of £800?
Please, please think again.

Re: Hi I am new
Please, don't breed your boy purely to get a 'replacement' for him when that awful day comes. It rarely works out well!
Both male & female, as already said, need to get, at the basic minimum, the following tests...
L2HGA (DNA Test)
Hereditary Cataracts (DNA Test)
PHPV/PPSC Annual Veterinary tests
These are not cheap & can take several weeks for the tests to come back with answers. So YOU would have to have these tests done on your boy before breeding him, and so would the female! Plus, does your boy have any faults? (Yes, I know all of our dogs are 'perfect' in our eyes, but there's always a fault somewhere!) Does the female have any faults? (Same again!).
Sometimes people need a short space of time to adjust to their beloved pet leaving them, and this is an important time for you to allow yourself to grieve.
Just enjoy your boy NOW - I'm sure he has many many years left to love you in return.
