Hello and help please
Hello all,
Unfortunately my 8yr old rescue staff has developed what i think is termed,
Myoptic muscleatery itrophy or to me he has a sunken skull.
My local vet advised to just monitor him on a monthly basis as he said if i have him scanned and it is a cancerous tumour it is to close to the optic nerves to risk operating. This has been devastating news for me also my pet insurance does not cover Dexter for this treatment.
I would like any information on this problem including expected life span and first signs of pain and discomfort as i would not want him suffering in any form. I am a retired pensioner and live alone i have checked prices for a new friend but i cannot afford £1000/3000 as seems the average prices for puppies rescue centers all closed covid.
I hope i can have Dexter of course for another 4/5 yrs. I would be happy to get any feed back regarding Dexters condition and how best to maybe find a new best friend.
Thank you,
Kalvin

Hello and welcome.
Oh gosh, how awful for you to see your canine friend in such a situation.
I have no experience of « sunken skull » as you call it but a quick internet search seems to suggest that a blood test is necessary for diagnosis and to see if it isn’t a response to a tumour.
Then they seem to say that it can be brought under control with the monitored use of medication. Here is a link

Maybe ask your vet (or another) if some kind of affordable treatment couldn’t keep your boy comfortable ?

Re: Hello and help please
Hi from me & Katy, so sorry to hear that Dexter has this condition I don't know much about it but the link Nifty has given you has lots of information.
Regarding getting a new friend, have you considered getting a rescue? Once the lockdown has lifted I'm certain there will be lots of young dogs looking for a proper home as the owners cast them aside to go back to work!
