Blue puppy genetics
Hello everyone,
I have a genetics question, as this is not really my field. I am talking to a breeder with a beautiful black female, who will be in her heat soon. She is carrying a blue gene from her mother's side (blue mother herself). The breeder is going to breed her with a black dog who supposedly also has a blue gene in his genetics, but in his pedigree there are just black or brindle dogs 3 generations back.
I know that blue dogs tend to have some skin problems. If there were any blue puppies in the litter, I wouldn't go for one. Could someone advise if it is smart to go for a puppy from such litter at all? Is there a higher chance of health problems for the pup because of blue genes in both parents, even if the puppy and parents wouldn't be blue?
Thanks a lot for the answers

Re: Blue puppy genetics
If the dog & bitch are not actually blue, then there should be no extra health problems with the pups, even if a couple of them are blue. The blue gene is recessive & so only a problem if the pups have a double load from the parents.
I take it both parents have had the relevant health tests for L2HGA, HC etc?

Re: Blue puppy genetics
Hi from me & Katy Welcome to our forum. I'm not great on genetics but know blue on blue breeding is not always good, if blue is back in the line a bit I'm sure it's better.
