Amout of food
Am I over or under feeding or have we got it right.
Weekly diet consists of tinned wet food. chicken breast and rice. boiled egg and some dry food.
On a daily basis currently 4 meals a day she eats 2 tins of wet food (2x400g) and a chicken breast with rice, sometimes reducing tinned food by 200g and giving boiled egg with 100g of dry food.
Always licks her bowl clean and seems hungry.
She is currently 15 weeks old and weighing 10.6 KG
Thanks.

Re: Amout of food
Hello and welcome.
Please do drop a line in the New Members Introductions to tell us a bit about yourself and your canine family member(s).
First question, are we talking about a “pure” SBT ?
Just to compare, my bully build Nifty was weighing in at 12kgs at 5 months old.
The best way to know if you’re feeding correctly is to look how puppy is. They must never be too fat as that’s bad for growing joints.
Just two things bothering me a bit, but I’m trying to find more information.
800g of tinned food plus extras per day seems a huge amount. Adult recommendation for my adult girls is 200g per day
Then your diet seems very (too?) varied for a pup. Is there a reason in particular ?

Re: Amout of food
Hi & welcome.
At 15 weeks she should be on 3 meals a day, so you should preferably be cutting down on one of her meals & increasing the others proportionately.
However, I do think that wet food isn't great. As most of it is water you have to feed larger quantities. Is there a particular reason for feeding wet?
I would also stop adding the chicken etc. All dog food is complete & you shouldn't need to add anything else - the odd treat is fine, but by constantly adding the extras you'll need with her nutritional values.
Which wet food are you feeding?

Re: Amout of food
Thanks for replies.
Am feeding pedigree chum as breeder was feeding same and was advised not to change as could upset puppy.
Been trying to introduce Harringtons dry food slowly but pup not so keen, loves it if mixed with boiled egg and read that egg are very good for dogs if not fed in excess.
Started on chicken and rice after a bout of diarrhea and she loves it, I assumed would be good for her one meal a day.
Did plan on reducing 4 meals a day to 3 at 16 week.
She looks good, no fat on her and can almost see ribs but not skinny.
And yes a full Staffordshire bull terrier.

Re: Amout of food
Oh, pedigree chum isn’t scoring very well in nutritional value
https://www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/dog-food-reviews/0447/pedigree-puppy-tins-with-jelly
That might also explain the 800g/day.
Harringtons is an improvement but I think you can do better https://www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/dog-food-reviews/0594/harringtons-puppy-complete
As gilly says, I would stop the variety in the food and for the same budget, stick to one type of decent quality.
My girls were on orijen or acana puppy kibble and today, they are on Carnilove. Nifty was eating proplan at breeders and couldn’t get her off that quick enough after the soaked-kibble test. Opium arrived eating some strange kibble which I promptly replaced too (after transition, of course).

That's great, but as Nifty says, you can get a better quality food for roughly the same cost. I'm not totally against having a small layer of fat on a very young dog as they have so much growing to do! I would rather a few grams overweight than a few grams underweight.
But she sounds fine as she is, so no problems there, it's just that you have to feed SO much wet food to get the right nutrients, and that can lead to a too-full belly, which in turn can lead to gastric problems. If you can get her to eat dry food, then that's great; what you could do is add a little wet food or meat juices to the dry food to make it more palatable. Perhaps even a little olive oil.

Thanks sounds good, I have plenty of Harrington's left so will find a suitable wet food to mix in, (she always had wet food so she fussy still).
