Toilet training
Hi,
We have had Nero (9 weeks old) for 5 days now. From day one I have taken him in the garden and this is where he is going to toilet. But indoors he won’t use the training pads, should I stop taking him outside ? or just make sure he is always supervised indoors as it is when we are out of the room, that he sneaks in a little wee.

Re: Toilet training
It’s great that he’s going outdoors, you’re off to a great start. That’s where you want him to toilet in the future so keep taking him out every half hour.
For puppy training pads, maybe the breeder didn’t use them so he doesn’t know what it’s for. Also, how are you using the pads ? Just unfolded on the floor or on some kind of support ?
And where are you putting them ? In strategic places in the house ?
You need to be careful because in a few weeks time, he will want to taste and shred the pads so be warned in advance
As for the pee in the house, do you see a pattern of when it happens ?
After having come in without peeing ? After eating/drinking ?
After waking up ?
You will need to anticipate his sneaky pee to avoid it happening. He’s too young to be asked to hold on.
Does he already pee in the same place in the house ?
Make sure you clean the area with a cleaner that destroys the scent too.
I know pet shops sell specialized cleaners but I’m sure there’s a cheaper household solution, though I’ve forgotten what it is right now, oops.

Re: Toilet training
We have put pads in the kitchen where his crate is and he has used them once, we have pads in the living room and he has used them once. The pads are unfolded and just laying on the floor and yes he has already started to rip them up.Do you stick them down ?.
There doesn’t appear to be a pattern,I have noticed he starts circleing, that’s when I pick him up and take him outside. It only appears to happen when we leave him alone, learning our lesson quickly. We are using Extreme stain and odour remover.

Re: Toilet training
I would personally keep the pads near the back door, don't put numerous around the house, this will confuse him as to where toileting should be. You can get pads that have little stickers in each corner to stick down so they don't slide everywhere, Pets at Home sell them.
Going 'wee wee's' (or whatever you want to call it) should be encouraged after everything and anything Nero finds remotely exciting. This includes playtime, eating, drinking, someone entering the house etc... amongst every half hour as Nifty suggested.
You need to celebrate when Nero does his business outside, go crazy with praise, and even use a high valued treat such as a small amount of cheese or half a mini sausage. He will associate outside = yummy treats. When he messes in the house, you cant tell him off, simply clean up and ignore as if it never happened. He will realise he achieves nothing from this.
My rottweiler used to get so excited running around the garden when he did a poop, it was such an achievement bless him
All this said.... dogs bladders are not fully developed until they're at least 1 year old. This means they cant fully control it so its your job to spot the signs. It takes patience and persistence. Staffies are extremely intelligent and will quickly pick toilet training up, but only if everyone in your household is following the same rules.
keep the pads in the same place, stick them down
celebrate when he pees outside and reward with treat
clean up inside messes and never scould for this behaviour.
Good luck!

Re: Toilet training
You can probs order them if needs be
Yeah I dont see why not, its a high valued treat and should be given in moderation. When i say high valued, its something that you wont give them any other time other than what your praising them for. Cheddar, mozzarella are fine. A teenie bit will suffice, if your not confident then use a shop bought puppy treats that have a high meat content for extra yummyness
A small percentage of dogs can be lactose intolerant, if you decide to use cheese, monitor him afterwards, just to be sure

Re: Toilet training
My sister puts sheets of newspaper over her pads to limit their destruction, I used supports like these (with a grill on top)
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Kerbl-Puppy-Toilet-Training-Set/dp/B00XISEXEA/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=B00XISEXEA&qid=1589736938&sr=8-1
I only had one pad in the play pen where my girls are when I’m at work.
I personally wouldn’t dot too many around the house as the ultimate aim is for him always to go outside.
I presume you take him outside before you leave him alone ?
As Kita says, have that same word for his toilet runs and you cannot praise highly enough.
Yes, you can give puppy cheese treats but be careful not to give too many treats (see feeding guide).

Re: Toilet training
Hi Kita,
Good, the only accidents we seem to have is when he is busy and forgets to go outside. We have had a couple of mornings when I have got up and he has had a poo on the mats but I have worked out that I was giving him some cooked chicken as treats and it obviously doesn’t agree with him.Since I have stopped the chicken he is back to regular.
We are really pleased with the way things are going. We have stopped getting up in the middle of the night for him as he appears to be able to hold his bladder until I get up at 06.30.
