Newbie Moose the Staff
Hiya!
We have a 2 year old staff who we got a year ago, he needed to be rehomed as his owner had to move. Just wondering if anyone knows anything about how common is it for him to be born with pointy ears and no tail? As that’s the reason we were given as to why he didn’t have a tail when we asked! He just has a little stun barley anything at all! His ears are always pointed I’m just wondering if he could possibly be a cross breed?
This is just out of curiosity as we’ve always wondered, it doesn’t matter if he’s full breed or cross breed he’s the most amazing dog and we wouldn’t change him for the world!
Thanks

Re: Newbie Moose the Staff
I'm certainly no expert, but it sounds as if he had body modifications (they cut his tail and ears). Both rottis and staffis are born with tails and ears that fold over at the tip.

Re: Newbie Moose the Staff
Hello and welcome.
Difficult to tell if it’s a “Nature’s hic” or human manipulation for the tail and/or ears without a photo.
Deformed tails from birth are more common than you could think. Nifty has a deformed tail which is a third of it’s supposed length. It does add charm
I have also seen pure bred staffies with sticky-up ears like a Boston terrier. They just forgot to stay folded at the tips.
It’s not common but it does happen.

I do also agree with his little tail adding charm, I think it’s the cutest little stump iv ever seen although we have had some issues with people assuming he’s vicious because he doesn’t have a tail poor boy!

He's gorgeous Love his ears! I'd say his tail has been docked from what I can see but he's still a great looking boy Monty is a cutie too

Re: Newbie Moose the Staff
What a sweetie, and his brother is very handsome too.
Definitely natural ears and he looks very staffy indeed.
I can’t tell by the tail but is the tip square or tapered when you feel the tail bones ?
Deformed tails can often have the slightly longer hair at the tip (think bulldog tail), a docked tail will have the same short coat hair all along (think previously doberman tail).

Re: Newbie Moose the Staff
Hi Jenc, thank you very much we love his ears we think they make him all the more special and handsome! I was convinced his tail was docked too but after reading what Nifty has said I think we may be dealing with a deformed tail! His tail bone is a bit pointy & tapered, he does seem to have a lot of long hair at the tip and we’ve always said it reminds us of a frenchies tail!
I guess he might just be a slightly deformed but perfectly perfect little boy thank you all for your advice i definitely came to the right place you all know your stuff! One more thing about Moose, has anyone else had any issues with socialising their staff? He is amazing with Monty but he just does not like other dogs he is a nervous wreck around them, we’ve been trying hard for a good 9/10 months to improve his reactions to other dogs but he just can’t seem to let any other dog near him. We were going to take him to a trainer but then covid happened!

Re: Newbie Moose the Staff
If it’s any help, my Opium is not particularly nice around other dogs.
As much as she’ll play and even play rather rough with Nifty, she’s a scaredy pup when out of her comfort zone and she’ll snap first to keep others away.
We’ve been at canine school for a year now (puppy school, education and now obedience classes) and although she’ll throw herself on any human, she does not want to interact with dogs (even told off my instructor’s rottweiler )
I don’t think I can change her nor expect her to be as globally friendly as Nifty as she just doesn’t have the same temperament. But on each occasion, I try to make the experience as positive as possible.

I have the same issue with Katy She's got a couple of friends (dogs) but is scared of every other dog we meet & barks at them!
Have a look at Absolute Dogs, we are working on their training tips atm
Great videos to show you how to work on different issues & it's all reward based
