Armpit Rash
Hi all Staffy owners
I am a new member and I am looking for some kind of help and guidance on my blue Staffy armpit rash.
Perro is 8 months old and last week I have noticed a few marks under his both armpits (about 4-5 under each armpit).
They were a bit pinkish colour and were getting a little bit itchy for Perro but not excessive or anything. Couple of days ago I have used a little bit of sudacream, and last night gave him a bath in a dog shampoo for flees and sensitive skin. This morning I have used some sudacream as well and waiting if this will help.
I am a bit concerned as I was reading how prone to allergies staffys are.
He is a very very healthy boy and apart from these changes under his armpit there is nothing bothering him (fingers crossed it will say this way) .
We feed him with Liliys kitchen dry food (with chicken for puppies) and I add o table spoof of wet food , same brand.
We didn’t have any issues whatsoever with this food and his coat is absolutely stunning and soft and shiny.
Other than that he is not getting anything else?
This is my first Staffy and to be honest I wouldn’t be surprised if I am not missing something from his diet and his armpit issue my be the result of the diet?
Also we try to give him quite a bit of exercise and training!
Everyday we go for a good 45min-1hour walk and exercise , a lot of running and chasing frisbee.
It also crossed my mind this monger be causing this rash? He has no hair under his armpit and the sweat and exercise might be causing issue?
Can anyone please help?
Maggie

Re: Armpit Rash
Hi, welcome to the forum!
You said it yourself, staffies are prone to allergies This can be caused by a number of things however if you wanted to find out exactly the cause then this will require a strict 12 week Royal Canin food plan followed by expensive flea treatments and blood tests at the vets
My boy is 9 this year and has 'suffered' with itchy skin all his life. I say suffered as I alleviate it as much as I can with half a piriton (anti-histamine) and sudocreme on the days he scratches a lot. His allergies tend to only flare up in Summer after running in long grass, he gets all lumps and bumps under his belly and especially his armpits. Scratching then leads to scabs and scars. You can help by wiping him down after walks, not necessarily a bath but just a thorough wipe down should suffice.
You can get a shampoo for dry itchy skin but don't overbath your pooch, this can be bad for their coat due to washing out essential oils and can make dry skin drier!
In regards to food, have you considered a fish based diet? This way your pooch will get lots of oils. You can add supplements to fish based kibble as well such as primrose oil. This all helps towards healthy skin and keeps the allergies at bay.
Hope this helps!

Re: Armpit Rash
Hi from me & Katy I would suggest trying a over the counter antihistamine 1st before changing his diet. Katy starts coming up in lumps & rashes as the weather warms up & she's charging through grass.

Re: Armpit Rash
Hello and welcome.
Does your staffy wear a harness ?
If so, and as he’s still growing, does it still fit correctly ?
Have you changed washing powder or have they changed to a “new and improved formula/perfume” ?
Just a few environmental issues to check before looking at medication.

Re: Armpit Rash
Thank you so much everyone!
From the Lily’s kitchen brand for puppies there is only chicken available, below is the photo of what it contains.
We’re using collar as like you said Nifty Staffy he is still growing and harness is not good for him.
We started giving him antihistamine, but do you think one tablet a day is ok? What is the recommend for dogs? How many mg a day is ok? I don’t want to poison my puppy:(
And like you said Nikita this might be just because of spring/summer time. This rash is only under his armpits and nowhere else . Fingers crossed it will stay like that

Re: Armpit Rash
The rash cannot be sweat as dogs don’t have sweat glands under their armpits ...
I don’t see why a harness is bad for your puppy (as opposed to a collar) but I do think he is getting too much exercise and impact (frisbee) to boot.
You might want to consider the 5 minute rule : 5 minutes exercise per month of age until adult, and no impact sports (frisbee, agility, canicross, flyball, etc) until at least 12 months to protect from joint damage.

Re: Armpit Rash
I'd try Piriton - 1 tablet, twice or (if necessary) three times a day, spaced out as evenly as possible.
If you don't see an improvement within two or three days, it isn't likely to be an allergy.
However, it could be an intolerance. How long has he been having the Lily's Kitchen?

Re: Armpit Rash
Oh I see! I didn’t know that! Will definitely cut time on the exercise then! Thank you Nifty
And also didn’t know they haven’t got sweat glands under arm pits 🤭🤭🤭
Perro been first on dry food called Pero special for staffys but he started getting little lumps under his skin, then we found Lilly’s kitchen and been on it now for about 5-6 months.
I’m starting to think this is definitely allergy as a lot of pollens in spring time.
Thank you gillybrent I will start with the tablets as advised and watch him for a few days
Will let you know how he is doing
Thank you all for your reply it’s much appreciated 🥰🥰🥰

Re: Armpit Rash
To cool down, a dog does not sweat like a human. Their mechanism for cooling down is to pant as a means of evaporative cooling.
More rarely, a dog will sweat through their paws, but never from a furry part of their body.
In summer, many people put a tray down with a few inches of water in the bottom to help cool off a dog (when the dog walks through or stands in the water). Soaking/showering a dog’s entire body with cold water is not an effective nor recommended practice.

Re: Armpit Rash
Does the Pero food contain a lot of chicken? If so, it's possible that he has an intolerance to poultry. You could try a fish based food, or maybe lamb?

Re: Armpit Rash
I have just checked what they both contain and Pero food contain 41% chicken and Lily’s kitchen 38% and 7% salmon.
I’ve attached pictures below of their content.
It might be the case gillybrent he has developed intolerance for chicken. Lily’s kitchen for puppies is only one they do and it’s chicken and salmon.
I’ve started giving him antihistamine as advised above and watch if this is the allergy to pollen . If this will not improve I will definitely look into swapping his food to fish/lamb.
Thank you for your advice gillybrent
Can you recommend a good brand for puppies?

Re: Armpit Rash
It could be an issue with the grain in the food also! Try one thing at a time, start with the antihistamine. If that make no difference cut out chicken, no change then go grain free!
I have always used Wainwrights from pets at home, never any problems!

Taste of the Wild is a good one - they do 'all life stage' foods ; venison, wild boar, lamb, fish & bison.
If you have a Kennelgate or Pets and Friends you may be able to get some sample packs to try him on.

Re: Armpit Rash
Hello again it’s been a few days now and I thought I will share an update of how Perro rash is doing. Unfortunately it’s gone a bit worse I don’t know if it’s the case that it will get worse before it will get better.
His armpit are more red and he got more itchy.
I’ve attached a photo below
Last week it was a few separate changes under his armpit but now it is all one bit swollen rash.
I’m still giving him antihistamine 3 times a day
Checked his food ingredients and the one he is getting is grain free. Then I’m thinking it might be chicken that’s giving him this rash?
I will give him antihistamine for a few more days.
Also using coconut oil to soothe and sudacream
After each walk I wipe him with a damp cloth and try avoid long grass.
Can you advise what else I could do please?
My heart is breaking seeing him like that
I even hoover house every day , and steam the floor just in case this is something at home.

Hi Perro,
Thanks for keeping us in the know!
I know its not nice seeing your boy in discomfort.
You said Perro was itching a little, can you clarify if the Piriton has stopped the itching?

Re: Armpit Rash
I’m internet surfing for something else but maybe you can have a look at puppy pyoderma for your boy’s rash, if it isn’t getting any better.
It needs a vet diagnosis (by skin scrape or other) and can need a course of antibiotics ...

Re: Armpit Rash
Hi everyone! Not sure what and how but we had a breakthrough!!! Perro armpits are much better!
Antihistamine worked, KITA90 it definitely stops him from scratching apologies for not replying and staying quiet but wanted to see for a couple of days if it’s really worked.
The only thing we changed we started using aloe Vera instead of sudacream or coconut oil.
I’ve attached pictures below of the armpit
All redness Is gone also it is not swollen anymore.
