HELP !!
Hi everyone, I joined this group because I am desperate.
7 days ago I woke up to let my staff outside and I noticed he couldn’t stand up. I immediately took him to the vet, and they said he had a slip disc and was now his back legs are paralysed.
The vet said surgery would cost $8000 and given his age (10) he believes the likelihood of it been successful is slim.
So I of course took him for a second opinion. That vet told me to put him down
I don’t want to be selfish and keep him around because I love him to much to let him go, and I don’t want to put him down because he is so happy, no change in his beautiful personality but I understand him not being able to walk is no way for a dog to live.
I have tried to keep him as still as possible in hopes he will hear but he is a big baby and gets so excited to see everyone so he now has scratches all on his feet from dragging them.
I am hoping anyone has any experience with this and could give me some advise on what I can do to help or if there is even any hope.

Re: HELP !!
Hi from me & Katy So sorry to hear about your boy 10yrs is not too old for surgery like that I believe! The choice is yours I'm afraid. You have to decide on quality of life. Is he in pain & can he toilet? You can get those wheely things for paralysed dogs so he could get about without hurting his feet.

Re: HELP !!
What an awful thing to happen.
If your dog is healthy, and has a strong heart, I wouldn't think that surgery is impossible. It may take him longer to recover than a younger dog, but it should still work.
A 'wheelie' is one alternative, but are there any holistic vets/practitioners near you? They may be able to help with massage/manipulation.

Re: HELP !!
Welcome. Im sorry you have this issue. Im in two minds on this one. One one mind, im sorry but i would pts - i don't agree with keeping a disabled animal because "you" can't deal with the decision. On the other hand, at 10 and if otherwise healthy surgery should not be that hard on him but you need a vet who will do that and then the months and months of physio and it could go well or could all be a disaster and end up with much more suffering than intended. If you have the money at hand, a 3rd opinion with a specialist won't go amiss but i would have to stress that you accept what the 3rd one says..if they say pts and you say no then im not sure id bea ble to support that.
