Training vocabulary
Can I possibly ask you all to help me compile training vocabulary, like “sit”, “heel”, etc.
Thanks in advance

Re: Training vocabulary
Id use one one only and avoid sentences keep your tone even and praise highly when each dog has done as asked. Id also take each dog out individually one after the other at first no distractions and choose a quiet place. I highly recommend you visit victoria stillwells webpage theres hints and tips on everything theres also videos. Staffies are a favourite of hers.

Re: Training vocabulary
Id use sit in usual way
Id use wait or stay at kerbs crossing the road i found wait with mia more effective.
No firmly if she went to touch something she wasn't mean't to or do something she wasn't allowed to do. (Stick her head in someones shopping bag.)
Right paw
Left paw
Roll over
Biscuit
She was pretty easy to train tbh too clever by half.

Re: Training vocabulary
Less wording confuses them as they focus only on one word.

Re: Training vocabulary
We are keeping in touch with Seren’s sisters and they have already started going in the show rings to practice for future competitions. I almost feel a bit quilty that we aren’t doing the same as Seren has great potential, but I wouldn’t know where to start with that and it’s not something I really fancy doing.

Lay
Touch ( this is her recall, she comes to us and touches our hand)
Dig ( teaching her this and will eventually lead to her scratching on a wood covered with fine sandpaper to keep her claws short)
High five
Chin ( just learnt this in class and it's perfect for vet visits, flea treatments etc as the dog is relaxed while putting their chin on your hand)
Heel
Middle ( the dog runs in-between your legs and stops in the middle.
Weave
Find it

When we are walking off lead or on, keeps her walking next to me but not at heel. The magic hand does the same thing too

Ah yes, close as in a position.
I thought it was close as in the action
I use the equivalent of “close to me” for Opium but I’ve been told that it’s too long (even though it works)

Re: Training vocabulary
If it works, use it!
I've always thought that it doesn't matter what word you use as long as you're consistent. So, you could say "pants" instead of sit, and as long as you use it every time, your dog will still associate the word with the right action!

Re: Training vocabulary
Tapping whatever leg you want them near is a good one but takes a bit of practice and say "heel" or "come". emma the commands you use are brilliant just shows the work you put in and how intelligent misty is. i trained myself but took her to obedience and puppy class at 3 ..

Re: Training vocabulary
Not gona be much help here. Lexis entire vocabulary was "OI!" beyond that she never quite got things.
Billy had great tricks..sit, stay, lie down, bark, paw...and he was only ever told them in dutch (he was from holland) so when i said them in english he did it anyway and if i didn't move he didn't do the trick but stared blankly then would sit hoping thats what i said. thus i don't believe a word means much to them but body language does.
Just my experience though.
i find the same with the horses. They are told to go back with your body, but saying the word back doesn't mean a single thing...

Re: Training vocabulary
Yes I agree body language does count for a lot. In training class we sometimes use hand signals instead of words. So if we do a Circle where the dog is in a sit and has to run to you and go around your body sometimes we stand still and just flick our hand and she will go around.
Misty is a terrible creeper on the long distance work. So the dog is in a sit or lay then you walk away and call them to you then do an emergency sit before they reach you. Misty will creep nearer us before she sits so we have you say sit once ( we never repeat commands as it teaches the dog to only do the action after several repeats rather than one) then raise our arm with a flat hand and she will then usually sit. It's never her best though as she will always creep to get closer!!

Re: Training vocabulary
Of course body language counts, and hand/body signals will be understood (providing they are taught), but dogs DO understand words as long as they can associate that word with an action.
It's always useful to teach physical signals as well as voice commands - you never know when they will come in hao!

Sit is the most common world but also exist 'stay' and 'okay'
