What is your dog like at the vets
In the waiting room.
V quiet and well behaved.
Over excited, wanting to go to all the other dogs.
Shows fear
Has been known to show aggression
And with the vet?
Relaxed and happy to be examined?
Has to be given a sedative?
You have been known to use a muzzle?

Re: What is your dog like at the vets
Roxy lurrvs going to the vets. Can't wait to get in the door......there's always new people and animals to meet. After all, does'nt everybody want to be Roxys friend ( LOL, that's what she thinks anyways ) She will sit....but can't seem to control her excitement to start with.
She's fine with the vet checking her out as long as they don't try to handle her head ( she does'nt like that ) and she always gets a liver treat at the end ..YUM

Re: What is your dog like at the vets
Suki always wants to say hello to everyone she meets. So before I take her to the vets I make sure she has been properly exercised. Also before I take her for an exam I make sure she has already met the staff and gotten a treat so she will associate going to the vet as a positive experience. I don't ever use a muzzle on her simply because I don't want her to feel as if she is being forced into a situation where she can't defend herself. This usually makes for a good experience although she has given her dermatologist a good solid woof on occasion.

Ti Amo is pretty good, but he gets to excited, that if I don't allow him to go and say hello to everything, he cries
After 20 mins, that can be a pain for all, so I sometimes stand in the car park, and they shout me when it is his apt.

Re: What is your dog like at the vets
Jethro loves going to the vets.. and they love him there too. He had a biopsy done on a lump he had and they had to stick a whopping great needle into it.. they said it would hurt, but he didn't even flinch..they were very proud of him ! ( yet he is terrified of a wooden mouse trap !! )
Winston has been to the vets for his needles, and the emergency dash when he was stung by something.. and both times he lapped up all the attention . He is going again on Monday for his last lot of puppy needles..hopefully that is it until he is due for desexing and microchipping.
But yeah both my boys love going to the vets!!

Does she make a grunting noise?
Ti Amo does that, if over excited, or when he first goes out for a walk.
He sounds like Darth Vader, and it can be a proper red face!
Someone said that he may have a 'soft palate' or some such thing...

Re: What is your dog like at the vets
Blondy and Cassie are great in the car and in the vets and love meeting new dogs and people and getting loads of attention Taz on the other hand goes nuts, in the car he hates it unless he has his head out of the window but thats not always safe, in the vets he see's another dog he goes nuts and its like his strengh triples, but since i have made him a blindfold which he wears in the car and in the vets he's alot more calmer. because he uses his noise not his eyes which cause the problem if you ask me.

Re: What is your dog like at the vets
Oh dear. Dempsey likes the vets well enough, and the veterinary nurses, and the receptionists - loves them all & they all like him. But he hates going to the vets. I can't say I blame him, 3 times in the last year he's had a stay in the vets hospital, plus he broke a dew claw and had to have it snipped off.
As soon as we turn into the vet's drive he pulls to go home. He scrabbles as hard as he can to go the opposite way to the surgery and then he sits in the surgery panting & shaking, giving the vet a wrinkled-headed wide-eyed sorrowful look.
So much for nasty vicious bullies!

She makes a choir of noises! One of her first homes gave her back because 'she makes funny noises' I think its a staffy trait to be honest

Possibly down to the short muzzle, or something of that type.

Re: What is your dog like at the vets
I think staffs tend to have a wide variety of noises, much more than a lot of other breeds.
Bandit was extremely vocal at the vets, but mainly because he wanted loads of attention (and got it) from everybody who happened to be there!

I knew someone who actually changed their middle name to that of their dog! (Not me, I might add!)

I find my staffie rarely barks.
He will if he hears the postie behind the door, but even then he soon is silent againt.
Not sure if others feel Staffs tend not to bark a lot...

Thats cute! Moo barks, but its more a 'boof' unless its something that freaks her then she has a proper bark!

Well, I guess 'cute' is one word to describe someone who adopts the name of their dog, as their own middle name, and drops their actual middle name
My friend's staffie, it was a barker.
It would just stand there, and bark and bark, at him.
You could never get peace. I started to suggest that rather than pander to the barking, he ignore it, walk away, then when the barking ceased, reward that.
I also suggested he give the dog a Kong, packed with bits, so that it had something else to do.
Seemed to work.
Yay!

Harvey loves going to the vets the strange lad, and doesn't get stressed or anything, which makes life easy

Re: What is your dog like at the vets
There are some vets who have waiting rooms that are too small, and not really fit for purpose, imo.
I suppose not all dogs like going to the vets, and I have often felt that waiting rooms should be adapted with this in mind, with maybe two or three simple 'cubicles' that people could wait with their dogs, rather than sit among everyone, on a day in which it is very busy.
Just a thought...
