Kibble use by date
The kibble that Opium arrived with stated that it should be used within 15 days of opening, on a 3kg bag !
I have been researching and Acana/Orijen should be used within 3 months of opening the bag.
Just got me thinking that the bigger bags might work out cheaper but the kibble in the bottom of the bag might not be as fresh as it could/should be.
I’m opting for smaller bags to ensure kibble is as fresh as possible, even if it means spending a few pennies more

Re: Kibble use by date
The best alternative is to buy an airtight tub to transfer the kibble to once it's open.

My kibble is already in airtight container but Nifty can sometimes be a bit tummy sensitive

If it's airtight, it'll last we'll past the use by date. I suppose in larger bags the kibble in the middle/bottom of the bag is protected from the air by the kibble above - that wouldn't be the case with smaller bags.

Re: Kibble use by date
Bumping up this thread as I was reading another article which says that there is the problem with the oils in kibble which oxidize in air once the bag is opened and after a fortnight, the kibble can be rancid
Article was also criticizing the practice of transferring kibble into other (airtight) containers that owners often forgot to wash between filling with kibble. The oil would stick on the sides of the container and oxidize to become rancid. It would then contaminate the new kibble poured on top
Looks like I’ll be sticking to the 3kg bags of the new kibble my girls are trying, and continuing to put the whole bag in airtight container to keep as fresh as possible.

Re: Kibble use by date
Problem is that they really do push the maxi 12kg bags of kibble, over here in any case.
With the 3kg bag, should last my girls just over a week but I have the choice of 1kg, 3kg or 12kg bags so 3kg it will be

Yes I think that would be sensible I'm on mid switch over & Katy seems to like the new kibble. Good job too as it's quite expensive but very good quality
