Kibble questions
Why do so many breeders feed and wean onto kibble like Proplan and Royal Canin ?
Is it just for cost reasons ? because these kibbles aren’t scoring very highly in kibble reviews
Do you change flavours of the kibble you give (if applicable) ?
Do you believe in feeding “light” kibble, especially to spayed or neutered dogs ?
Can fish flavoured kibble, which is generally lower in energy that same make other flavour kibble, be used as a light alternative to light labelled versions ?

Re: Kibble questions
When I got Katy she came with adult Bakers kibble I've fed her on wainwrights kibble since I got her, she's now on grain free of the same make. They have 4 flavours so I alternate as 2 2kg bags lasts a month, so today I bought the other 2 flavours. I can't imagine how boring it would be to eat the same stuff everyday I always add something to make it more interesting. I've never liked tinned dog food but I slip raw into her bowl
She's still on 1-7yrs kibble but the seniors one is only one flavour so I'm not keen to change yet!

Re: Kibble questions
Oh yes, I always add something to kibble in the evenings. From frozen blueberries to a sprinkle of grated cheese.

Re: Kibble questions
Breeders ween on to those brands because it's likely they're members of those brands' breeder's club. They get very cheap starter packs from them.
I don't see the need to give a lighter food after neutering. The only reason dogs put on weight afterwards is because their 'drive' lessens & so they don't self-exercise as much. If a neutered dog puts on weight all you need to do is up the exercise a little or cut the food down a little.

Re: Kibble questions
I think it’s just because the vets stock royal canning and recommend it so much. They do here in Ireland anyway. You won’t find much other food then that in the vets. And a lot of people don’t want to do their research and find out what good food is, they just think that just because it’s recommended by people it’ll be fine. The breeder we got Luna off told us to use Royal canin. Same with a different breeder that my mother got a chihuahua off about 10years ago.

Re: Kibble questions
Out here the vets stock Hill’s science plan.
Nifty arrived home with a bag of Proplan and my friend feeds her frenchie Royal Canin. It’s rare to see ads for pups eating raw/barf or orijen, for example.
Opium was eating raw but left the breeder on some weird kibble as her sister’s new family wanted her weaned onto kibble.

Re: Kibble questions
To be honest most people I know with dogs would feed royal cannin, I’ve had this talk with a friend before that’s been using royal canin for years and she was shocked when I showed her online that it’s nowhere near as good as it’s made out to be.
There’s a huge pet store near me and when you go to the food isle royal canin does take up most of it with a specialised food for different breeds etc I think that’s what adds to people wanting to get it, they see the food is “specially made” for their breed so they think it must be the best option.

Re: Kibble questions
I remember when I was a child, people used to feed pedigree chum (in a bright yellow packaging). But then there started to be rumours that it wasn’t compatible with purebred dogs ...
