Hi
My Bailey is 5 months old now and weighed 9.4kg last week, how much dry food do you feed you pup at this age.

Bailey is on barking heads grain free puppy food and I'm giving him 125kg 3 times a day so 375kg a day plus treats - is that enough or should I be upping it now he is growing. We did up from 100kg 3 times a day recently, he doesn't seem underweight or anything just not sure if it's enough as he always eats as if he is starved

Are you following the recommended amounts?

If so, and your pup's growing well but isn't skinny, then you're fine.

As a matter of interest, what brand of food do you feed him? Sorry, just seen it's barking heads. If you're not happy that he's feeling 'satisfied' after eating, then it might help to change the brand of food?

Amount of feed often has many influencing factors including metabolism and activity of the pup so there’s no stone set quantites to be fed, just guidelines. As long as he looks good and healthy, it’s alot of the battle already won.

I’ve just read a few reviews of this kibble as no previous knowledge.
It scores 4.2/5 on one site and 3/5 stars on another (also taking into account value for money as it appears to be pricier than equivalent foods on the market).
However, recommended quantity for 10kg pup is 151g/day so you’re feeding more than the double Straight Face

I would be guessing that he’s needing a bigger portion to get all nutrients he needs. The ingredients in 3rd - 5th position are rice, potato and oats which might be overdosed so partially acting as fillers.

I personally would consider switching to another brand of kibble (I feed orijen) because I think you could reduce his portion size (so save a few pennies in the process) whilst still feeding all he needs.

Maybe you could look into slow feeders to avoid him gobbling his food ?
Mine is a gobbler and I recently started a thread, if it can help Smile

It's always a good idea to slow down feeding, but it isn't always effective. I've known it to actually put a dog off his food! By all means try it, but if your dog doesn't settle with it, stop using - you don't want him to be afraid of his food bowl!

Have you thought of transitioning to raw?

Hi Littleman, can i ask is your dog wormed regularly? I know you said you feed 3 times a day perhaps 2x a day and larger amounts would be more beneficial for the dog as really at this age they don't need feeding 3x a day as soon your dog will need adult dog food. Id also have a vet check to see theres other problems perhaos the vet will recommend your dog is given adult food slightly earlier.

Thanks for your replies, yes he is fled and worm every month as recommend by the vet, maybe we will try a different brand of food although barking heads grain free was highly recommended to us, what do you all feed your dogs

I doubt it's worms, you'd see other symptoms.

I'd always recommend trying raw, but other than that, Taste of the Wild is good. Or Millies Wolfheart.

Orijen is a very good food, but is more expensive than other comparable brands.

Maybe, but some of us aren’t lucky enough to have a bigger choice Wink

Millie’s wolfheart is one that is regularly recommended here but I can’t get it where I am.

That's true. We can only go by what's available & then choose the best from those!
