Lightning Thunderstorms.

Post by MattsBabe7 Fri Sep 15 2017, 16:33

Was halfway through walking Chase when a loud rumble of thunder cracked overhead.
Chase pricked his ears, looked at the sky and carried on walking Surprised

The storm followed us for the rest of the walk all the way home and he didn't seem fazed by it ... Myself and my son on the other hand were pooping ourselves not listening

Anyone's staffy scared of thunder?

The only thing we've found that unnerved him was loud vehicles like dustbin trucks and lorries.

Gus doesn't bother with thunder although I did struggle to get Gus to walk past a fallen leaf the other day Laughing

Don't think we've had any thunder while we've had Hank but we have a large list of hilarious things that do worry him Laughing

That made me laugh James, we have similar but haven't had a fallen leaf yet Laughing

Thankfully I have 3 dogs who couldn't give a stuff about thunder, fireworks or anything else much that lots of dogs are scared of. However, Millie will go into meltdown about other things such has her breakfast if she is in one of her 'scary food' moods Rolling Eyes She used to lie on the floor shaking at things like the kitchen broom, me carrying a book, etc.

I'll pop something in the puppy section but this thread has reminded me that now is the ideal time to start preparing for fireworks. Desensitise now and you shouldn't (hopefully) have a problem later.

I have thought about doing that now Liz for bonfire night, does it work playing sounds of the fireworks loud in the house? I've seen you can get CDs but I imagine YouTube would do the trick

I was wondering if somebody would mention fireworks and was gonna ask if YouTube might help?!

Thinking about it, I go to a lot of car shows and meets and there are always people there with their dogs.
I want Chase to be a dog we can take everywhere so he can experience different situations and be sociable (within reason) but some cars are very loud and pop and bang, which can kinda sound like fireworks sometimes.
Maybe firework videos will help with that too?!

'scary food' mood ... Chase has a 'Hoover anything up' mood!

I'll write something up tomorrow, but in essence you start pairing noises with positive things until you've built an association with loud sudden noises with niceness.

Here you go. Let me know if any of it doesn't make sense or if it's full of typos!

I don't think Chase will have much of a problem. My kids are always banging things together and making me jump!

I only found one typo ...
It says about the dog salivating cos the bell meant food.
It says MEAN instead of MEANT.

Thanks, I'll fix that.

You should hopefully be ok, just do keep an eye on those first bangs and be ready to go into 'yay!' mode if needed.
