Oh wow that is certainly a reaction. Did Buddy walk through some bushes or rolled on something that might have caused this?

If he's really uncomfortable or they don't start going down by morning I would pop him along to the vets Ian.

Hi Ian

Think he might have eat something as his wind is also terrible.  We were on our normal walk and he only sniffed bushes etc he has always done

He went for a walk tonight, the wife is taking him to the vet tomorrow

Hi Ian

Thanks for asking when I got in from work today he was jumping around like a spring chicken, lumps nearly all gone

After talking to dog owners at work I think he may have eaten some ragwort.

We have been on a walk tonight and he was fine

Kids and dogs don't you love them

Post by Mistys Mum Tue Nov 29 2016, 08:45

Glads he ok. Misty gets this also. It's scary how quick the lumps appear. The first time it happened we thought she had been stung by nettles or something. She never seems bothered by them. In her case we think it's a plant she brushes up against from the neighbours garden that hangs over into ours or covers the footpath. It's only in the summer months it happens. We just give her a piriton if it happens but she hasn't had them this year as we made sure all the plants were trimmed back.

Are you sure it could have been ragwort? It's usually dead by this time of year, it's very unusual for dogs to eat it, even horses don't usually touch it unless it gets into hay, and ragwort poisoning (in horses at least) is invisible, it causes liver problems.

He's clearly had a reaction of some sort - rolled on a red ant nest or something like that maybe? Hopefully it's a one off but if it does happen again I would get the vet to check him.

Many thanks for all your comments
Having done more reading I have removed the ivy we had in our garden. Buddy was not to good after I had removed it as he wanted to help me take it out.
Hopefully that will be the cause removed. Next one is to try and stop him eating goose poop on our walk

Ha ha if you find the magic way to do that please let me know. Goose poop is Mistys favourite, it's like I take her to a Michelin starred restaurant when we go to the lakes  Laughing

Misty sounds the same as Buddy
Hard decision do I keep to normal walk and constantly say no when he goes to eat it or totally change his walk not to include local lake. So not using a muzzle
Not including the lake will only be going round the block on pavement, not as interesting for either of us
Is goose poop really harmful?, some say yes some say no, also worried he will stop eating as filling up on goose poop
I am on a learning curve with Buddy.
Our last dog was a Staffy we had for 16 years but he hated going out. Complete mummys, boy and lap dog

Ah, Ivy, that makes more sense! I kept trying to think of what it could be in the winter. Hopefully now the cuprit has been removed you won't have any more problems.

Can't help on the goose poo, or any other revolting things they love to eat. One of the joys of dogs!

Post by kelayne Mon Sep 18 2017, 13:22

hi all,
i know this is an old topic but i just wanted to share about my Nancy and her lumps,
we were in cornwal last year on holiday, and during the night Nancy started acting odd, pacing around etc, i switched the light on to discover nancy looking like this,
Lumps deleloping rapidly after walk Img_0511

obviously i rang the vet straight away, it was a bank holiday Monday so i had to pay an emergency call out fee £200 before they would even see Nancy, but i wasn't going to risk it, so the vet said she had probably had an allergic reaction to something but because she had experienced so many new things during the holiday we couldnt pin point it but we are guessing it was an insect bite , due to Nancy itching one particular point more than anything else,
So the vet gave her a steroid injection due to the muzzle of her nose being double the size and her breathing being a bit labored, the vet also gave piriton tablets and advised we have them handy incase of future breakouts. The picture above was taken after visiting the vets and she remained looking like she had rice crispies under her skin for about 2 days. The vet also told me that staffys are prone to allergies bless their sensitive soles Crying or Very sad
Then low and behold just this week my partner was gardening and Nancy was outside in and out of the shrubbery and a few hours later the rice crispie lumps started to appear, we were straight on the piriton and managed to get it under control without a trip to the vets, again the lumps stayed for a couple of days and were nothing like the first time but i think we can safely say she has allergies, and piriton is always in the cupboard under the sink! Any short coated dog is subject to contact allergies.

Most disappear within 48 hours, but if they don't, or if the reaction lasts longer than 48 hours (or obstructs breathing) then ask a vet.

Misty gets this sometimes. It looks awful but never seems to actually bother her. The vets told us to give her piriton too.

I had this with my staffy bitch , she went through nettles and reacted just as bad , I gave her a antihistamine tablet and it worked a treat, lot cheaper then the vets !!! Any allergy is usually treated with them even bee stings etc .

I can safely say it wasnt nettles that caused this reaction she never went near any nettles on the day in question we were on holiday she was mainly on the sand Smile , and as i said Piriton wouldn't have sufficed due to her muzzle swelling and inhibiting her breathing thats why a trip to the vets was needed and a steroid injection, im not the type to rush to the vets on a whim but on the other hand i wont risk my dogs health either, but each to their own thumbs up

I think you did absolutely the right thing Kelly. Each situation is different and Piriton or similar would probably have done the trick if it wasn't so sever a reaction.

If it were just bumps I'd have tried the antihistamine as Jon suggested as we have those to hand for my Flo's grass allergy.

OK !! I was purely giving my opinion on what happened and how I dealt with it from my own experience first hand !

I'm no vet or profess to be one. Your reply has a hint of "I could have done better" towards me in there or of one that indicates that I don't care , which is as far from the truth as possible. I have owned staffies for years and would bend over backwards for them and was advised to always carry antihistamine just in case , and all I was saying was that it worked for me. I didn't say your problem was stinging nettles or that you had been near them, All I said was that I had a dog with the same reaction and how I dealt with it !

Thanks

hey sorry i didnt mean any offence , but you did say "its alot cheaper than the vet" and i just wanted to confirm that the vet was actually needed due to breathing difficulties, in fact the second time this happened, the piriton alone worked a treat because i noticed the allergy quicker, in no way am i saying i did things the right way and you didnt, sometimes words on a screen are interpreted in the wrong way ... sorry Smile

No offence taken at all . Just wanted to clarify as a new member that I am a caring owner, and yes sometimes the vet is the only answer. I work in the dairy farming world so have a can do attitude to animal health and supply many products for cow and calf health.

Best wishes X
