Neighbour's dog....they hate each other!
Hi Staffie Folk
Needing a bit of advice please.
When we got Koop he was just over a year old and got on fine with all dogs although he could be a bit timid around bigger dogs.
Our neighbour over the fence rescued a boxer about a month later than we got Koop. They met out a walk and initially got on ok but they started getting aggressive, then it escalated into a full on fight with the boxer having the upper hand. Our poor boy had a big scar where they had to be pulled apart and now he barks at all bigger dogs. He hates the boxer now and barks at him through the fence. We've tried walking them together but they both bark and struggle to get to each other the whole time. We thought this might get them used to each other but now I'm worried that we're doing the wrong thing and we're making it worse. Advice please.

I wouldn't try walking them as it seems too stressful for both. Could you try getting some lovely high value treats for Koop and when he is in the garden and the boxer appears in the next garden give Koop a treat. Hopefully he will learn that ok the boxer is outside and I get lovely treats so therefore the boxer is a good thing. Maybe after a while you could graduate to having them both on lead in a field at a far distance, decreasing the distance and giving treats. If either dog gets stressed then increase the distance again.
Really hope it works, the next door neighbours at my parents have two yappy things that actually headbutt the fence to get to. Misty. Luckily she ignores them, I wish their owners would do something but they don't.
Good luck.

Re: Neighbour's dog....they hate each other!
Thanks for your help.
We initially tried the high value snacks when they are in the gardens but never made much progress, I was worried he was going to jump the fence. It's 6ft high but he can almost jump it! Perhaps we never gave it long enough and perhaps I was too worried about my boy getting over that fence.
We'll stop the walks and go back to square one!
Thank you

Hi jeannie id walk koop with older more calmer dogs firstly see how koop does then. In the garden introduce the "leave it" command said sharply but not shouted. If koop has a favourite toy give him this a reward when he doesn't bark or try and jump the fence. Another good thing is to throw a frisbee or a ball as to distract him from the fence altogether.

Well, try the distraction methods by all means, but in my experience with staffs over the years I wouldn't bank on it working.Like the old saying goes (once bitten twice shy) once a staffy gets in a real fight with another dog they don't seem to forgive in a hurry. That dog will most likely always be on the staffs hate list.

Re: Neighbour's dog....they hate each other!
Thanks Crystal and Graham for your advice.
He's fine walking with an other neighbours retrievers and walks most days with a couple of young collies with no problems. It's just really the boxer he dislikes and the barking at bigger dogs is because he's scared. We'll keep working on the distraction with treats and toys and hope it gets better. He's good at leave...for a treat. He's good at most things for a treat but I think you might be right about the boxer always being on his hate list!
I'll let you know how we get on. Thank you!
